Many in the wider crypto community wrongly believe that the SEC v. Ripple case in the Southern District of New York only has to do with one digital asset -- XRP. The truth is that when you read and understand the SEC's complaint against Ripple, you'll see that EVERY digital asset is in danger if the SEC succeeds in this case.
In this episode, John E. Deaton walks you through why the legal ramifications for every cryptocurrency, every token and every digital asset holder are huge in the SEC v. Ripple case.
On October 5, 2021, Deaton and a group of tens of thousands of XRP and digital asset holders were granted "friend of the court" status in the SEC v. Ripple case by Judge Analisa Torres. The judge found that Deaton's class-action will "assist the Court by briefing legal issues relevant to the case" and "that such assistance will be most beneficial during briefing on dispositive motions" when she moves towards summary judgment.

XRP holders and the company Ripple are not the only people being targeted in the crypto community by the reckless overreach of the Securities and Exchange Commission. In March 2021, months after the Ripple lawsuit was filed against XRP, the SEC sued the company LBRY (www.lbry.com), which built a publishing blockchain that operates the Odysee platform (www.odysee.com) and uses the utility token LBC for tipping and other functions on the publishing network. As John Deaton says, the attack on the LBC token in the SEC's complaint is even more egregious than the SEC's attack on XRP, and its victimization of a small company like LBRY at a time of massive, unpunished scams like Squid Coin, shows an SEC that is out of control in terrorizing the crypto space.
John Deaton's conversation with LBRY CEO Jeremy Kauffman in this episode shows that the Ripple case is only the best known case among many from a regulatory agency that appears determined to crush U.S. innovators in the name of asserting its regulatory turf. Kauffman describes the threats made by the SEC and its increasingly absurd tactics to subdue the New Hampshire-based company, all while clearly demonstrating to him and his colleagues that the SEC's staff have little to no basic understanding of how blockchain technology works or how it can be regulated properly.
