L’Appoggiatura is a young Lebanese ensemble specialized in the baroque music repertoire.
Although some of the musicians are modern instrumentalists, they focus on historical performance practice through research and a faithful interpretation of the genre.
L’Appoggiatura is led by Lebanese cellist and professor Jana Semaan who studied in Germany.
The idea behind this ensemble is to create a bridge between Lebanese and European musicians by regularly hosting session musicians and professors in partnership with GLAS “German-Lebanese Artists Society” as well as the Cafe International Baroque Orchestra for workshops and collaborative projects.
The ensemble aims to introduce historical performance practice to both the musicians and the audience in Lebanon.

Lyrics:

Jana Semaan's interpretation on Toccata Sesta (Toccata Number 6) by Baroque Composer Francesco Paolo Scipriani aka Supriano (1678-1753).
The video was filmed and recorded at the Church of St. Joseph, Hadath, Baabda.
Jana's words on the Toccata Nr.6 :
"The Toccata Nr. 6 has some characteristics of a "gigue"; a fast dance with English origins that ends a typical "suite de danses" in the baroque era.
The fast tempo, binary rhythm, and dotted notes make this piece an ideal ending to the first half of Scipriani's Toccatas.."
Jana's Bio:
Jana is a Lebanese born cellist and music educator.
She graduated from the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart-Germany where she completed her studies in cello performance and achieved her Master's degree in Early Music/Baroque Cello.
Today, Jana pursues her career as a performer and teaches music at several universities in Lebanon. She is head of the first Center for Early Music in the Middle East at the Antonine University.

Jana Semaan's interpretation on Toccata Decima (Toccata Number 10) by Baroque Composer Francesco Paolo Scipriani aka Supriano (1678-1753).
The video was filmed and recorded at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Bqaatouta, Lebanon.
Jana's words on the Toccata Nr.10 :
The Toccata Decima in D minor has the most brilliant character. The composer starts with a prelude-shaped introduction marked by a very sharp rhythm, then, keeps a 16th notes pattern shaped by a 4 notes motive. Sometimes, this pattern is interrupted by a small cadenza, a falling sequence of notes, or 8th notes followed by a rest. These interruptions help brake the chain and create a build-up. leading to that agitated and perturbed character. This piece is great to practice right arm flexibility!
