For the last ten years Marvel has made a point to talk about diversity as a core value in their company and the stories they want to tell. However, this hasn't worked out very well, either in sales or as we are learning in the treatment and pay of their staff. A Business Insider article goes into detail on Marvel's largely failed diversity initiatives, and notes that several creators are skeptical of their promise to put more emphasis on diversity going forward. But what does "diversity" mean exactly to Marvel? Are we talking characters or the internal staff, who remains shockingly NOT diverse by any metric... including factors like experience, location or background. And what about the massive imbalance in salaries? Editors are making $30k a year without a raise, while executives in the company pull in seven figure deals. What is the real problem here?
