STORY: Mexican authorities on Wednesday (July 27) discovered 98 migrants abandoned inside a trailer in the southern town of Acayuca in the state of Veracruz.
A paramedic from the local civil protection group, who was treating the migrants, said some 400 people were believed to have been travelling inside the trailer. Migrants fought their way out when many started to suffocate from lack of oxygen.
Medical personnel treated migrants with knee and ankle injuries. One person was taken to hospital when found unconscious, paramedics said.
Mexico's National Guard and navy patrolled the area looking for migrants hiding in the surrounding bushes where the trailer was left abandoned.
In recent years, hundreds of thousands of Central Americans have crossed through Mexico on their way to the U.S. border. More recently, migrants from other countries such as Cuba and Haiti have also traversed Mexico in an effort to enter the U.S.
