Argentina’s Milei is boasting about implementing “Shock Therapy.” What is it and has it ever worked? Let’s look at some of Shock Therapy’s greatest hits, from 90s Russia through to Argentina itself. The results speak for themselves.
Unrest in New Caledonia continues as French President Emmanuel Macron visits the Pacific island amid rising tensions. Protesters continue to block several roads, while riot police and military vehicles patrol the streets of the capital, Nouméa.
At least six people have been killed and hundreds wounded after violence erupted across New Caledonia, referred to as Kanaky by the Indigenous Kanak population, following Macron’s attempts to tighten French colonial rule over the archipelago.
While in New Caledonia, Macron pushed for removing protesters’ barricades, saying that the approximately 3,000 French security forces deployed “will remain as long as necessary, even during the Olympic and Paralympic Games” in Paris, which end at the beginning of September. He added that the state of emergency could only be lifted if local leaders called for removing the barricades that protesters erected in Nouméa and elsewhere.
Pro-independence leaders, who a week earlier declined Macron’s offer to hold talks via video call, now joined an in-person meeting with him in Nouméa. Rival pro-France leaders, who want the archipelago to remain part of France, also attended the talk.

Indigenous groups and trade unions swarmed the streets of downtown Buenos Aires to protest lithium extraction by multinational companies, which "leave no money in Argentina." New reforms aim to boost lithium mining in Jujuy province, in the middle of the lithium triangle, home to most of the world's lithium deposits, also known as "white gold."
The reforms are expected to accelerate the eviction of Indigenous communities from their territories. The reform threatens more than 350 of Jujuy's 400 indigenous communities, only 12 percent of whom have communal land titles.
"Due to the social crisis, we have been going through with a salary below the poverty line. The people have stood up and said, enough is enough." - said one protester. Meanwhile, the US-based Exar Corporation has invested almost a billion US dollars in mining projects in Jujuy this year.
The protests build on days of heavy clashes in Jujuy province in June against the criminalization of indigenous resistance to extraction by the local right-wing government under Gerardo Morales. Several media outlets reported that the wave of protests was the largest since 2015.

Millions marched in the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, against the bombing of Yemen by the US and its allies.
The US and UK launched 73 bombardments against Yemen on January 11, 2024, and attacked the International Airport.
When Israel declared war on Gaza in October 2023, Yemen’s Ansarallah, commonly referred to as the 'Houthis,' joined the war on the side of the Palestinian people a month later by blocking the Red Sea.
Yemen’s Red Sea blockade has turned around more than 2,000 ships. The threat to the flow of world capital clearly bothered the West more than Israel’s months-long war against Gaza.
Senior Ansarallah official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said that Yemen’s goal is to 'stop the crimes of genocide in Gaza' while the US and UK are 'supporting and protecting its perpetrators.'
'Every individual in this world is faced with two choices that have no third: Either to stand with the victims of genocide or to stand with its perpetrators,' he added.

Cross-border tensions between Israel and resistance forces in southern Lebanon have escalated once more. Just hours after a massive wave of Israeli airstrikes hit several villages in southern Lebanon, killing at least 11, a barrage of about 20 rockets was fired from Lebanon at the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Shmona in northern occupied Palestine.
Israel’s attacks at resistance groups and, especially, civilian targets in southern Lebanon have intensified over the last few days. Meanwhile, 71% of Israelis support carrying out a war on Lebanon, according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv. Paired with large-scale Israeli military movement from Gaza to the Lebanese border and Israel looking to end its operations in the enclave, the likelihood of an Israeli invasion of Lebanon seems to become a reality.
Cross-border attacks between Lebanon and Israel first broke out after the start of the war in Gaza, with resistance groups located in southern Lebanon carrying out attacks in support of the Strip. So far, the attacks on the border have resulted in over 300 people killed in Lebanon, including 194 resistance fighters and at least 40 civilians.

Hundreds of thousands of people around the globe show their solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are victims of war crimes committed by Israel and supported by the West. Despite bans on Palestine solidarity in some European countries and soaring support for Palestine worldwide, mainstream media conveniently look the other way. The ongoing protests challenge the narrative of uncontested Israel solidarity.
