Who Wins the Battle Between Broadway Divas and Movie Stars? (Episode 77)
During the 1960's and 1970's, Hollywood musicals underwent a sea change -- the original film musical was seemingly overnight replaced by big overblown adaptations. One of the most controversial aspects of this was that suddenly favorite Broadway performers were infamously recast with mere "movie stars." But was this practice really such a negative? We examine "Gypsy," "My Fair Lady," and "Mame" -- three of the most controversial examples -- to see.

This channel is dedicated to all sorts of content surrounding the entertainment industry. It was originally formed as a repository of content created for the California Community College Chancellor's Office Department of Economic and Workforce Development Doing What Matters Initiative. Running from 2013-2018, numerous events and assets were created to enhance anyone interested in entertainment as a career to find the best career pathways in. In order to support that effort, a series of videos were created that dealt with "below-the-line" or "crafts" positions, which are often not taught in regular curriculum.
The program further expanded to include digital assets that might be amusing to general students. Dan Watanabe, founder of this channel, was a grant director.

Further, this could be of cultural interest to westerners.

The world of distribution is one that most writers, directors, actors, etc. are afraid to even approach. It is actually not bad at all, and once you get a handle of what distribution actually is, being creative is even less challenging. Knowing the truth will set you free!
We also go over some of the strategies you may use to get that all-important "foot in the door."
In the second portionl, we focus now on why coming up with a slate of projects rather than doing them one at a time is a smart business move.
THIS IS A REUPLOAD OF TWO VIDEOS ORIGINALLY UPLOADED IN EARLY 2019. THE CONTENT HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY REVISED TO KEEP IT RELEVANT FOR TODAY. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SOME OF OUR OTHER OLDER VIDEO REVIEWS OF MOVIES AND TELEVISION, PLEASE VISIT THE "SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS" PLAYLIST. THIS INCLUDES OUR OLDER TITLES. THEY ARE CURRENTLY UNDER "UNLISTED" TO AVOID CONFUSION WITH OUR NEWER VIDEOS (OR, AS IN THIS CASE, REPURPOSED OLDER UPLOADS). THANK YOU FOR WATCHING. LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE IF

Please see the following updates on the channel!
OLDER "SENSEI DAN VIDEO COMMENTARIES: My older commentaries from a previous channel are being reuploaded here now. They may be found in the SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS Playlist. I am putting them up as Unlisted so they won't be confused with the newer content. Please check them out!
JAPANESE MUSIC AND DRAMA TITLES: Original copyright owners have become FAR more strict with pulling down old uploads. For the time being, I am just putting up classic Japanese commentaries from the days of prime time movie showcases. These often but not always include embedded commercials from original telecasts I recorded. Depending on YouTube and the copyright holders' 's future policies, I may try uploading music and dramas again in the future.

"That's Entertainment" was a movie made partially because MGM was about to sell off its backlot, and partially because the studio was at the burnt ends. Utilizing some clip bits from previous compilations, celebrity interviews, and clips featuring the studio's classic musical numbers, the movie was released to shocking box office and a renewed interest in musicals (which, you may recall, were in doldrums following the failure of many high priced adaptations during the late 60s. We discuss the film and its timing during the height of the nostalgia craze.
And yes, that IS the telecast of the Japanese TV version running at the bottom of the screen. It's discussed near the end.

Arthouse favorite Ichikawa Kon (Fires on the Plain, The Burmese Harp) made a splash in the mid-70's with his transition to highly commercial mysteries based on Yokomizo Seishi's detective Kindaichi Kosuke. He eventually did four sequels and remade the movie in 2006 as his final film -- including many of the same original players!

***IMPORTANT NOTE: I have once again started tp upload certain music and drama programs from Japanese TV circa the early 1980s and American programs that are assumed to be in public domain. Some of this content may be removed after approximately one month.*****
"Kawafuchi Sensei" provides a variety of content:
-- Iconoclastic movie reviews and advice for writing scripts. As a former development executive and current college instructor, I started recording movie reviews as a way to amuse my students and encourage them to do their own videos. Somehow that would up as this channel!
-- Interviews with industry pros. These are a series of interviews recorded while I ran a grant for the California Community College Chancellor's Office that provided information to students looking to break into the entertainment industry. Most of these interviews cover jobs in entertainment that aren't generally known to those not in the industry.
-- Various clips from American television documentaries, movies of the week, and other assorted tidbits that are assumed to be in public domain.
-- Various clips from Japanese television, most circa 1978-1983 when I lived there. Most are scenes from American movies dubbed in Japanese. Most of these dubs are different from those found on physical media. Other videos feature the commentaries that often came before those films as well as commercials that were in the initial telecasts.
