Ep. 5648 - Daniel Larison: US Militarism Should Have Died With the Soviet Union - 12/30/21
Scott is joined by Antiwar.com contributing editor Daniel Larison to discuss his most recent piece. Larison argues that the period following the peaceful breakup of the USSR was the best moment for the U.S. to shed the militaristic blob it had built up in the name of fighting communism. Instead, the military-industrial-congressional complex scrambled to find a new enemy. And the next thirty years of meddling in the Middle East and Eastern Europe have resulted in today’s messy geopolitical status quo.
Trevor Timm of the Electronic Frontier Foundation discusses how the Freedom of the Press Foundation provides a fundraising medium for investigative journalism projects and controversial media organizations like WikiLeaks; the opposition to police surveillance drones in the US; the ominous Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) bill; and Google’s record on information sharing and privacy.

Stephen M. Walt, professor of international affairs at Harvard University and co-author of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, discusses the liberal interventionists and neoconservatives uniting in support of war in Libya; how the mission to protect Libyan civilians almost immediately became a mandate for regime change – despite claims to the contrary; fighting a preventative war based on anticipated massacres and imagined regional repercussions; the risk of moral hazard, where any and all “rebel” groups can demand help and protection – a bailout, so to speak; and how the US government somehow got on the right side of history by sort-of backing the Egyptian protesters at the last minute, after decades of stabbing them in the back.

Jeff Stein joins the show to discuss his latest article “Vietnam War: New Ken Burns Documentary Dismisses the Origins of the Futile, Disastrous Conflict” critiquing Ken Burns’s latest documentary series “The Vietnam War.” Stein reflects on his time in Vietnam as an army intelligence case officer and reviews and critiques Burns’s documentary series, which he says is well worth watching, but is not without its flaws. Stein then explains why French colonialism in Vietnam created a false premise in Vietnam—that there was ever a good reason to join the conflict—dooming the war from the outset and explains why the same parallel exists in the ongoing war in Afghanistan.
Jeff Stein is a national security correspondent and author of the SpyTalk column at Newsweek. He has written three books including “A Murder in Wartime: The Untold Spy Story That Changed the Course of the Vietnam War.” Stein spent a year as an army intelligence officer in Vietnam where he was awarded the bronze star. Adam Wunische discusses the fact that Afghans overwhelmingly want U.S. troops out of their country—and they are also optimistic about the chances for a peaceful resolution to the resultant power vacuum. Scott has always said there’s a strong chance that the civil strife that has plagued the country for years will just continue in America’s absence, but that that is no reason to stay. Still, it is possible that the various factions vying for control will be able to reasonably negotiate a peace.
Adam Wunische is a researcher for the Quincy Institute, an instructor at George Washington University’s Security Policy Studies program, and a PhD candidate at Boston College. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, completing two deployments to Afghanistan. Follow him on Twitter @AdamWunische.

Scott is joined by Ted Snider to talk about the real-time shift we are living through from a unipolar order dominated by Washington to a multipolar world where different blocs engage on more equal footing. They start with the war in Ukraine where western officials are doubling down on some of the choices that have thrown Eastern Europe into chaos in the first place. They then zoom out and examine how Washington’s recent foreign policy has driven Russia and China closer together. That leads finally to a discussion about the ramifications of this Chinese-brokered deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Ahmed Elassy, Organizer and Public Affairs Director for the Egyptian-International Coalition for Ending the Blockade and Rebuilding Gaza, discusses Hosni Mubarak’s arrest following his brazen public statement denying corruption and threatening to sue those who slandered him; how Egyptians have resolved to bring Mubarak to justice themselves if the military fails to do so; the foreign banks refusing to freeze the Mubarak family’s billions in ill-gotten assets; Ahmed’s meeting with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Dr. Nabil Al-Araby on allowing commercial goods into Gaza and working to open the Rafah crossing permanently; and the billions in Gaza aid sitting idle while the cement and steel needed to rebuild remains blockaded by Israel.

Scott talks with Peter Van Buren about the situation in Afghanistan. Van Buren explains that many of the people tasked with working on the Afghanistan War were, in fact, working to cover up their own role in the war. And that these individual failures played off each other to create one massive failure. On top of that, Van Buren argues that policymakers were entirely removed from the costs of the war. And because of that, Van Buren predicts we will soon find ourselves in a similar conflict.
