Integrating Non-Ordinary and Transcendent Experiences (Meditation, Psychedelics, Breathwork, Trauma)
Over a decade ago Avi Craimer had what is often called a spiritual emergency, an overwhelming and unexpected transcendent experience on a meditation retreat. It took him years of work and study to understand and integrate this experience, largely aided by his studies in spiritual traditions and psychotherapeutic modalities.
Avi has since become a meditation teacher and spiritual practice guide, helping others set up spiritual practices that work for them and also process and integrate experiences of non-ordinary states of consciousness.
This is a collaboration I did with Othership on using our breath to help let go. It's more active and upbeat than my usual thing. I really loved how it turned out, and what Othership is doing in general.
Othership is building the future of emotional wellness through social bathhouse experiences and an immersive breathwork app. They facilitate breathwork and meditations in the sauna, and then guide you through an ice bath / cold plunge.
I love how they are building community through these experiences, and I got to spend some time with the Othership crew last summer and I can say their hearts are in the right place.
This track features Harry Taylor, one of the founders of Othership and also one of their lead breathwork teachers and facilitators. I wrote the baseline scrips and then Harry worked in the appropriate breathwork practices.
If you like this style of breathwork practice, you can check out the Othership app which has a ton more practices like this, and breathwork practices for all sorts of purposes. Here's a link to a free 2 week trial:

This practice explores how we can let go of unhelpful habits and create new, healthy habits. We bring into awareness our habitual ways of being and compassionately reflect on what we want to let go of, and what we want to replace these old habits with. We then visualize the new habits and anchor in the feeling of acting them out, priming new neural pathways that will allow us to adopt these new ways of being.

This guided meditation begins with the practice of contentment, which is simply not needing anything to be different in the moment. From this base of contentment we begin to cultivate gratitude, explore what we’re grateful for in different dimensions of life, and using our breath to deepen our experience.

This practice reveals our innate wholeness. Our unconscious mind weaves together stories and experiences, ultimately creating a sense of self. But this sense of self is limited and illusory. We explore the parts of ourselves that feel fractured or inadequate and look deeper into our truest nature, which is already and always whole.

This is a brief introduction to what I feel are the core concepts in Buddhist psychology that could be helpful to everyday people in a mental health and wellbeing context. Buddhism contains A LOT, there are so many traditions and texts, but I've focused on discussed some of the more universal and pragmatic aspects of Buddhism and the ideas that are relevant to all of us.
In this video I mention Equanimity, more on that here: https://youtu.be/voKenlCBFNI

I am joined by Thal Mohammed, an integrative counsellor, to discuss her recently published article detailing her personal experience with psychosis, spiritual awakening, and psychedelics. I highly recommend reading her fantastic essay on this topic linked below.

Thal Mohammed trained for three years in Existential-Integrative psychotherapy and completed four years of Ph.D.-level courses in Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She is certified in MDMA-Therapy with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Since 2019, Thal has been co-facilitating an integration group with the Toronto Psychedelic Society. She created Integrative Practice Inc., her private practice, when she felt the need to distill her education and experience to help people. Thal uses various modalities in her work: existential, Jungian, shamanic, and archetypal.

Overcoming the challenge of self-love and self compassion is no easy task, but the key is to examine your values, specifically your unconscious values, and notice what values you are measuring yourself against.
This video explores why self-love is so difficult and how we can deconstruct a superficial value system and offers a meditative practice to find more meaningful and resonant values.

How does change happen? Here we explore how we grow through meditation and therapy, and life experiences as well. Getting to the core of how we change, how breakthrough experiences happen, and what the barriers to growth are.
I've noticed that across disciplines and experiences there are patterns of growth, and there there are certain themes to how people change and the barriers to change.
