In this video, I discuss some points which will help parents to understand the difficulties faced by their college-going children.
1. The importance of being aware and involved in the overall activities (both academic and non-academic) of their children without falling into the temptation of helicopter parenting.
2. The difference in the goals of the students during JEE and after JEE. Before JEE there was one single goal. After JEE, at an institute there is a wide variety of options to choose one's goal from. Parents need to help their children navigate the uncertainties and the confusion.
3. The education system at an institute is completely different from the regimented style of "teaching" which coaching institutes pursue. It is to be expected that students will have difficulty in adapting to this different style. Parents can help their children to appreciate that this is the real style of teaching and that the regimented style of teaching is not the natural order! What is required is to inculcate a sense of responsibility to complete one's own tasks and further one's own progress.
4. If students get interested in extra-curricular activities, parents should not take an antagonistic stand. They should try to understand the motivations of the student and discuss with them how they plan to handle their academic side-by-side. They should try to make their children feel that they are on their team.

I sit down with Prof. Anandaroop Bhattacharya for a heart-to-heart chat. Currently, a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Kharagpur and formerly senior professional at Intel, General Motors, General Electric, Prof. Bhattacharya has had a unique combination of extensive experience in both industry and academia. Through this chat he recounts his experiences through his PhD days, his days in industry, and how he came back to academia. He also discusses the skills required to succeed in an industrial job.

Through this video I wish to address some fundamental questions that students have regarding career within Mechanical Engineering. Many a time, students have some wrong notions regarding the prospects in this field. I hope to dispel some of these wrong notions.
Students also have some questions:
Whether a career in Mechanical Engineering can lead to high paying jobs?
Whether a career in Mechanical Engineering can allow for the creative application of their knowledge and talents?
What kind of career growth can they expect?
I try to answer these questions in a broad way.
Fill this form if you wish to post a question to me for a deeper discussion: https://forms.gle/M3ksxwjJHSB9zB4D7
Interesting questions, comments from the above form may be featured in future YouTube videos.

Students are often surprised in the aftermath of their 1st semester of engineering. In this video, I discuss some of the important points which students have to keep in mind as they go through this important transition phase from school life to a proper college life. What are these points?
1. Entrance exam results do not necessarily translate to semester results! High rankers may not end up getting high marks. Low rankers can end up being Institute toppers.
2. It is absolutely not the end if 1st semester results are not up to the mark. Semester system is a marathon, not a sprint. Student need to keep putting in a sustained effort.
3. Perhaps the dream of Department Change is no longer viable after 1st semester results. That is not necessarily bad. It is not true that you have missed the bus to be part of exciting new technology like AI and machine learning because ultimately when it is time for these students to join the professional world, AI will find applications in many engineering scenarios and then what will be really necessary are proper, genuine domain experts who can harness the power of AI to find creative solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems. So students must focus on become true domain experts within their respective departments.
00:00 Introduction
00:36 JEE Results don't convert to Semester Results
01:34 Situation of high rankers
03:01 Situation of low rankers
05:04 Department Change
06:55 AI, True Domain Expertise, Future
