It is said that there are four ages of humanity, with the Greco-Roman tradition, namely from Hesiod writing of four eras symbolized by four metals; gold, silver, bronze and iron. Whilst in Hindu tradition these are referred to as four cycles named Krta Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga and Kali Yuga (the Dark Age), with other ancient civilizations such as the Persians and Chaldean speaking of almost identical systems.
We are currently thought to be living in the Kali Yuga age, an age when Goddess Kali is fully awake and active, having been ‘sleeping’ during the previous ages; with the general consensus believing it started in 3102 BC. A time when Stonehenge was being built, the early dynasty period of the Ancient Egyptians began and the Sumerians and Akkadians ruled Mesopotamia.
With each passing cycle, there is a process of gradual decadence, with the ancient Hindu text Visnu Purana describing the Kali Yuga to consist of:
- Outcastes and barbarians ruling the banks and levying customs will rob merchants of their property.
- Property of the people will be seized by rulers of violent tempers with insatiable desires and little piety.
- The people will abandon agriculture and commerce and gain a livelihood through proletarianization and industrialisation
- Material wealth will be the only source of devotion; passion will be the sole bond of union between the sexes.
- Unscrupulous exploitation of the soil and demise of the cult of the earth.
- Men will fix their desires upon riches, even though dishonestly acquired, with all men conceiting that they are equal to the intellectuals (Brahmans).
- The women will pay no attention to the commands of their husbands or parents. They will be selfish, abject and slatternly; they will be scolds and liars; they will be indecent and immoral in their conduct and will ever attach themselves to dissolute men.
