Weaning Calves, Bale Grazing, and a Cow Move. This is Regenerative Agriculture in Winter.
In this video we separate this year’s calves from the cows. We discuss our bale grazing strategy with the calves and panels. We also move the cows to their last paddock in this pasture. The dog also gets in the action and gets a gentle warning from a cow. We also show off what a little L3940 Kubota can do.
Calving season is over for us now, we only have the milk cows left and they are a whole other story. As you hear in the video, we had 13 animals calve but the first heifer lost her calf so we only have 12 calves this spring. As you can see the cows are liking all the fresh green grass they get this time of year while we rotationally graze them through the pastures.
Calving season is right around the corner so we're moving the herd to the paddock right by the house. That way it's easy to go and check on them. As you can see we've recently discovered that cows really like bananas, so we used them to get the herd moving towards the pen. Sadly I run out of bananas near the old barn. Emily starts filming for the rest of the move near the end of this part.
In this video we show off our new John Deere baler. Our tractor isn’t new so we have to take it easy. On the way out Emily films a muskrat with some cow parsnip in the lake. You also get a fairly in depth walk around with the cows while she waters them.
This is the second calf to go into the creek, but we have a solution. We will post it in the next video. So far this little guy is doing great and is nursing. We’ll register him and hopefully show him. I will film us halter training the calf and his growth along the way.
In this video Emily films Dallas rebuilding the chicken tractor for the Cornish Cross broiler chickens. We also load them into it. Emily also gives a bit of a garden tour.
She got sent to pasture because Elma, now Daisy nursed out our milk cow that’s in production. Who we rely on for milk for the kids. You also get to see our other milking animals June and Shimmer.
Here's our first calving video for 2022, sadly we lost our first calf this year. It was born with a weird health issue and passed away. thankfully everything else has gone well. This calf is out of a line of our best commercial cows, and he is gorgeous.
