Coin Age, as an experimental film, aims at coining a new film form by blending fiction and documentation. The narrative follows a blind beggar as he shuffles between reality, fiction, fantasy and surreality. The film problematises the conventionally perceived demarcation between the concrete and the abstract as reality, fantasy and fiction percolate into each other. As the beggar journeys through landscape, cityscape and mindscape the film tries to depict how fantasy and abstract thoughts are conditioned by concrete realities. Fantasy is free, yet freedom (at an individual level) is limited by one’s physical and financial capacity. Money, an abstract noun in itself, in its concretized form of currency notes and coins, is the medium, devised by society, needed to transform individual fantasies into tangible reality. The beggar’s self-perception of his socio-economic position forms the foundation upon which his psyche builds its fantasies. Thus money infiltrates into the surrealistic gratification of his fictional fantasy. The film presents a collage of multi-dimensional viewpoints on money and its ubiquitous presence as the nuclei of our reality and dreams.
