Ep. 5095 – Elizabeth McAlister on Nuclear Winter and the Kings Bay Plowshares – 10/18/2019
Elizabeth McAlister of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 updates Scott on her legal situation, following an April 2018 incident in which she and other members of her organization broke into a Nuclear Submarine facility. The Kings Bay Plowshares are a group of Catholics dedicated to peacefully protesting America’s use of nuclear weapons, which, as McAlister reminds us, have the potential to end all life on Earth. McAlister was recently released from jail, and continues to await her trial.
Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent, discusses the emphatically relative phrase "Baghdad is better," imminent U.S. withdraw from Iraqi cities, former Sunni insurgents gone mainstream that can't go back again, the status of Kurdish post-invasion land grabs and the awarding of Iraqi oil contracts to foreign corporations.

Daniel Ellsberg, author of Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, discusses his articles “A Hundred Holocausts: An Insider’s Window Into U.S. Nuclear Policy” and “Hiroshima Day: America Has Been Asleep at the Wheel for 64 Years;” the “cultural lag” phenomenon wherein the technology of mass destruction overtakes mankind’s moral capacity; the objections within the military to dropping the atomic bombs (because firebombing Japanese cities had been devastating enough and surrender was imminent); the H-bomb’s staggering destructive force as compared to an A-bomb; how the Russian and US “hair trigger doomsday machines” put us at perpetual risk of annihilation; how the relatively cool-headed George W. Bush (as compared to Cheney and McCain) kept the US out of potential nuclear wars; and the stagnant pace of disarmament, even though it could be done quickly and is absolutely essential.

Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent, discusses the embarrassing performance of what was supposed to be an impressive display of U.S. military power in Iraq, the bitter sectarian divide remaining from Iraq's civil war of 2006-07 and why Kurdish autonomy my be preferable to true independence in the short term.
Michael Hastings (audio begins at 19:30), author of the article "The Runaway General" in Rolling Stone magazine, where he is now a contributing editor, discusses why the AfPak War unfortunately lives up to its name, the large increase in drone strikes during Obama's presidency, the elusive "inflection point" at which combat casualties permanently decline and why the "surge" in Iraq can't be duplicated in Afghanistan.
Andy Worthington (audio begins at 35:45), author of The Guantanamo Files, discusses the proceedings at Guantanamo that are grinding to a halt, why "material support for terrorism" charges have no relation to war crimes and should be tried in federal courts, the political realities that make Guantanamo's timely closure highly unlikely and the 58 Yemeni prisoners still in custody despite being cleared for release.

The great Daniel Ellsberg shares his thoughts on Julian Assange’s extradition hearing, comparing the situation to his own trial in the 1970s. Ellsberg, of course, was acquitted—in part because it was proven that the government spied on confidential conversations with Ellsberg’s psychiatrist. The CIA and its allies have been shown to have done the same thing in Assange’s case, surveilling both his doctors and his lawyers. On these grounds alone, Ellsberg believes the case should be thrown out. But Ellsberg also reminds us that in the analogy between the two cases, Assange is actually more akin to the New York Times, to whom Ellsberg eventually leaked the Pentagon Papers. Back then no one would have even considered going after the Times; this time around, the precedent is clear: going after Assange opens the door to prosecuting just about any news outlet in America.
