Alan Wake II is a horror game that, like its predecessor, is played from a third-person perspective.

The player goes through the story with two playable characters, Alan Wake the protagonist of the previous game and the new protagonist Saga Anderson. They are divided into two separate single-player stories that can be played in any order. However, the opening sequence and the end sequence of the game can only be played as Saga and Alan respectively. In the plot of the game, the storylines of the two protagonists are closely linked. As in the predecessor, the protagonists traverse environments and fight enemies with a flashlight. Players must be strategic and economical with the limited amount of batteries and ammunition that can be found in the game world as the story progresses in order to survive. The manuscript pages are also a recurring element of Alan Wake: Players find pages of a manuscript that predict upcoming events in the story. In contrast to the first part, Alan Wake II also has a new dialog system in which the player can choose between several options in conversations.

In the role of Agent Saga, the player also has access to her "Mind Place". Among other things, they can re-read manuscript pages they have found, re-watch cutscenes or upgrade weapons. There is also a board on which Saga visualizes the progress of her investigations. Attached to it are pieces of evidence, Polaroid photos and notes that can be analyzed and linked together.
