I check in after week 4 to describe life with my fancy new camera.
The Z6, Nikon's second-ever fullframe mirrorless camera is really fun to shoot with.
I'm really happy with it.

For the last 2 years, I've been cutting my own hair with a cheap buzzer with foamcore extenders hot glued to the sides. As the good weather approaches and things open up, I think it's time for me to stop looking like an upturned mop, and start looking presentable again.
Behold! My first haircut (given by someone else) in over two years!

I noticed that ultrawide lenses reveal the interaction between IBIS and rolling shutter in video by creating a strange wobbly breathing effect.
This effect is made even more noticeable when the footage is digitally stabilized in post.
I shot this footage at a high shutter speed (1/200) so the image would remain fairly crisp after it had been deshaken.
Shot on a full spectrum converted Nikon Z5 with a Tokina 11-16mm/2.8 lens and a UV+IR filter that blocks visible light and allows though the light our eyes cannot see. This was shot using the custom white balance preset I had made for 720nm.
Background noise arrangement composed, recorded, and programmed by Kyle Clements, 2023.

The biggest problem I run into is overworking my pieces. The solution I've found is to underwork them, display them for a while, and see what I think about it a few weeks later. For this show, I've had the paintings mostly finished for a good length of time, so I've had a chance to live with them for a long time, and make some decisions, and I really feel good about these.

How to Actually follow through on your New Years Resolution
This year no more cheesy intentional misinterpretation of the word resolution....this year, my resolution will be to follow through on things.
The way to really achieve something is the opposite of how people usually go about it.
People have this idea that you change your mind, then you change your actions.
We often make a bold declaration, or go to a motivational seminar, we get all pumped up and ready to change, and then....nothing...our determination fizzles and give up, or even forget.
That's not how you set off on a successful journey of self improvement.
You don't change your mind then your actions, you have to change your actions, then eventually, when they have become habit, you will change your mind.
But changing your actions can be so tough, and hard, and difficult, and takes so much time...Having your goal floating around inside your head as a vague far off thing that you will see in the future gets you no where. You need well defined, small, actionable things.
Baby steps. Just do it in baby steps.
I hate flossing my teeth. And I almost never did it. I'd go to the dentist, he'll tell me to floss, I'd tell him I will....then I floss for about 3 days, then go back to my normal routine of only flossing the night before dentist appointments.
So how did I get into the habit of flossing on a regular basis?
Through the magic of...baby steps?
Start by doing the easy part, and just don't do the hard part. Put it off til later.
These teeth are easy, it's the molars that suck. So I'm only going to floss these ones in the front.
It's not as good as flossing everything, but it's a lot better than not flossing any of them.
And after a few weeks, when this becomes habit and I don't even think about flossing the front ones, it won't seem like a big deal to go back one tooth further on each side and floss there.
Eventually, I became be a regular flosser.
So try to find that thing in your life that you want to change, break it down into small, easy chunks, and tackle thew easiest part.
If you feel a bit pudgy, don't try to lose 20 kilos, try to give up one desert, or one snack per week and start from there.
Happy New Years!

Review begins at 0:44
I replaced the eyecup in my Nikon Z6.
After my cheap tripod failed me by releasing unexpectedly causing my Z6 to slip off and smash on the floor, I had to replace my broken DK-29.
Due to absurd shipping rates and slow delivery times, I opted to try out a 3rd party replacement rather than going for a genuine Nikon eyecup.
In this case, I purchased the Kiwifotos DK-29 Long Soft Viewfinder Eyecup, which was the cheapest alternative I could find with shipping that would take less than a week to arrive.
This is a quick review of my first impressions.
The silicone seems stiffer, and rather than being a thin sheet that is rolled over, its more of a cast silicone edge pointing right at you, so it doesn't feel as soft. It also introduces some vignette effects around the edges of the viewfinder unless your face is pressed right up to the eyecup.
I'm not unhappy with this eyecup, but if this one breaks on me, I will likely go back to the official Nikon version.

I recorded some slow motion waves at Amherst Island over the Thanksgiving weekend.
120fps @1080p on my Nikon Z6 with my 14-30mm f/4 S lens.

This is my 4th (and probably final) video review about my 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 lens.
The first few minutes are general notes about the lens, the rest of the video is sample footage of me walking around, making note of camera settings and light conditions for later use. (This works better for me than writing it down.)
Overall: This is not a bad lens, but it is a one-trick-pony lens.
It is good for shooting central objects that are close by, maybe 1 metre away or so.
It is not good for edge sharpness or shooting distant objects.
The Nikon Z5 and Z6 have focus peaking that generally works very well, but for distant objects, it's difficult to get enough sharpness or contrast to trigger the peaking into showing itself, if you set your peaking to a lower sensitivity level. At the highest sensitivity level, the peaking goes too far and shows soft edges as being in focus.
There is a strong green/magenta cast to high contrast out of focus areas, and it seems stronger when those areas are far away.
This might sound like a long list of cons, but it's a $200 USD lens, that's about $250 CAD, for something that goes to 0.95. I wasn't expecting it to be a noct competitor. The 35mm is small and light, the noct is big and heavy.
If you are a fan of lens flare, this lens has quite a bit, and it's very different looking from any of my other lenses.
Despite being a DX format lens, it almost covers a full frame sensor, so it's great for square format shooting or full frame video, but for best image quality, shooting in crop mode makes a big difference.
Some really weird stuff starts happening right outside of the edges of the DX image circle, with a 'ring of sharpness' running around the edges,
Shooting wide open with the camera set to mostly automatic, I need to set the exposure compensation between -2 ev or -3 ev to have the camera match the way my eye perceives the scene.
In low light situations, the camera is able to see far more colour than the human eye, so I always enjoy the surprize of shooting with high ISO bodies and ultra fast lenses and seeing the night in a whole new way.
When I go on camping or backpacking trips, my usual setup now includes my 24-200 /4-6.3 and my 35mm /0.95, one lens covers all my daytime shooting, the other covers nighttime, and neither is too large or too heavy.
