In this round-up of the week, protests against coronavirus lockdown are happening across the world. Bill Gates has been named as the target for the most coronavirus conspiracy theories. And 56 scientists, including prominent climate scientists, send an open letter to endorse Joe Biden for President and condemn Donald Trump as anti-science.
The Mallen Baker Show is aimed at all people who see themselves as change makers, with commentary on issues and change movements with a particular focus on climate change and environment, social issues, free speech and corporate social responsibility.
This week was the 75th anniversary of Britain's health service, which people have said to themselves for decades is "the envy of the world". Well, maybe once. But now it costs more money than most, for worse actual health outcomes. What went wrong - and does anyone dare even discuss it in public?

How hot does it have to get before human beings simply can’t cope with the heat and die? Well, it depends. How much extra energy is needed to raise the Earth’s temperature by a set amount? Well, it depends.
These things depend on a specific climate variable that is hard to measure, nobody’s much talking about, that makes producing those climate models much more difficult. And can make a huge difference to the impact of climate change on relatively short timescales.
And it’s creating a surprising paradox that we’re only just finding out about.

Automation is coming, and it's going to be huge.
Never mind about companies sending jobs overseas. Current estimates are that anything between a third and a half of existing jobs will be replaced by robots in the next twenty years.
But such massive changes don't happen so quickly with no response or backlash from society. Are we going to see corporate social responsibility (CSR) reframed in the near future to include the basic requirement of companies to employ people even in situations where it might be more profitable not to?
Or, in the age of AI, do human beings simply go with barely a whimper as half of business, and industries such as farming, services, and a lot more besides dispense with flesh and blood labour in the name of productivity?

It’s the one single thing that explains why Europe’s approach to issues is so different to America’s. And it’s the one main argument to justify overclaiming of the science by certain climate change campaigns. It is, of course, is the precautionary principle.
Is it a hugely valuable tool for decision making in a dangerous and complex world? Or is it a well-meaning failure that stifles innovation and problem solving? Let’s discuss.

In this round-up of the week, America sees a week of protests and riots and police brutality and political manoeuvring and almost no social distancing. The result of the terrible events that led to the death of George Floyd.
What's the unfortunate truth why the protests are possibly going to result in the opposite to what they want? What are President Trump and Joe Biden doing to try to ensure events benefit their campaign for election? And what just happened that means we might get even worse violence further down the road?
If you want to solve the problem, you have to know what the problem is. And that’s what we’re getting wrong. Let’s discuss.

On my way to the CSR Lebanon conference in Beirut to talk about what needs to happen to help advance corporate social responsibility there. There are three things I've learned about international CSR over the last 20 years (The most important one is about leadership)
I also reflect on the recent decision to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport (and the history that makes that a corporate broken promise). On my way, I meet the fabulous Melody Hossaini, former contestant on the UK's The Apprentice, who is keynoting a session on social enterprise.

China cracks down on protests as Xi Jinping struggles to contain the failure of Zero Covid. Apple and Elon Musk spar over whether the tech giant is actively trying to bring Twitter down. The Dutch government tries a new tack to try to shut down food production in the name of the climate. And in this week’s short thought – a politician in the jungle reveals how far removed from reality you become if you let yourself be a hater.

Sweden’s totally different approach to the pandemic has failed, and it’s now caved in and followed the rest of us into lockdown. That’s what some are saying, but has it really? Also, did Britain go into lockdown based on dodgy figures? The US media suddenly notice that Hunter Biden is in trouble. And a leading figure who called for the punishment of Covid lockdown breakers gets caught breaking lockdown.

There are four countries in particular that are sufficiently low-lying to be already experiencing difficult challenges from rising sea levels. They are the Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Kiribati. There’s a certain amount of simplified nonsense that gets talked on the subject, and there are some interesting dilemmas and grey areas. Let's have a look.
