You must ask and answer this question for yourself, and NOW, decide where your line in the sand is and who will be on your side of it when the country completely disintegrates into chaos and, possibly, famine. Things to consider....Mentioned Channels @HOMESTEAD HEART @Rogue Preparedness @Prepper Princess
I-Cards linked to my original three videos from 2016 on this subject.

Thought you might like to see some of the new varieties we'll be growing this year in the garden with accompanying photos. What we will grow again and what we will not. Some of these are excellent for smaller gardens and/or containers as well.

Bruno, Bash and their girls, all 17 weeks old, having fun in the oak leaves. Apollo, the older Barred Rock, decides they're having too much fun, apparently and scares them away.

This video confirms what we suspected, that the black cat who has been prowling our deck and pasture is not neutered. Maybe this is why our normally territorial male cat (fixed) does not challenge him.

***All information verified by veterinarians I know personally who have avian experience, however any research at all will reveal to you that most respiratory disease in avians is not permanently curable. Avians are not mammals. Check the Merck Veterinary Manual if you have doubts***
Overuse of antibiotics is a real issue. The FDA/USDA has pulled all water soluble animal antibiotics off the shelves, crippling the small farmer who truly needs them for his/her livestock, though really, it's all about government control, not help-Control the food supply, control the people. Yet, it is a fact that antibiotics are very much overused in backyard flocks today in a "shotgun" approach. Most have zero idea if the chicken has a bacterial or viral infection and throw antibiotics at the bird anyway. Antibiotics will not treat viruses, as you should know. Never treat an illness in your flock that you know or suspect is contagious. Antibiotics do not cure, they only control symptoms. Diseases like Mycoplasmosis or Coryza create permanent carriers. And a carrier bird can infect others, even when they are not currently showing symptoms. Is your entire flock worth the life of only one chicken? Of course not. This is a harsh reality of the hobby that you need to be prepared for, folks. If you can't hack it, you'll end up treating and treating and re-treating and the joy of owning chickens will be diminished. Natural remedies won't fix those diseases, either, though they have their place in alleviating symptoms. They do not cure these diseases any more than the antibiotics will.
All that said, I do understand someone who has two or three hens and wants to treat those, no plans to get more until those have passed away. But, for those of us who sell chicks and hatching eggs, we cannot afford to cause someone else heartache by allowing that carrier bird to go to another home and spread disease to another flock. Please be conscientious and practice biosecurity-the best thing to do is to keep disease OUT in the first place!

Trying to decide if Hector has what we call a "rainy day back", a downward-sloping back from hackles to tail rather than horizontal. It's difficult to assess since he's slower to get an actual tail than any other Barred Rock male I ever raised, plus he walks in his head-down-stalker-mode most of the time. My line of males gets theirs much, much earlier than Mr. Hector has.

An update to the video from 2016, plus an added segment on how to assess if something you are considering is a need or a want...what if you do it or buy it and what if you don't? It's a matter of choices and priorities for a less stressful life in the future and absolutely imperative in our current world.

Originally recorded in mid-August 2020 before I took a month-long break between Aug & Sept. It had somehow had been set to private.
Important lessons can be learned from this movie, my favorite movie of all time, set during the French and Indian War. It's about American history at a crucial junction. It's about history being made, well worth a watch if you have never seen this masterpiece. The original theater version has many great lines that are missing from subsequent versions.
