Taft federal prison to close Jan 31st. RDAP DAN
Taft Federal Prison which is run by the private company Management & Training Corporation (MTC) Will close its doors to future inmates sentenced to the Beaura of Prisons permanently Jan 31st, 2020. The prison has severe structural damage that will not pass inspection. The cost to repair the damage is estimated at 100 Million dollars that the BOP says it does not have. There are over 340 employees that work at Taft Federal prison along with over 2500 inmates that will need to be relocated to a different federal prison which will likely not be a private prison. This will cause huge impacts both to the economy of Taft as well as to the inmates and their families.
Taft Mayor Dave Noerr described it as "a nightmare" for the 60 to 70 employees of the facility who live in Taft and a financial hit for the city of 10,000 that sits in southwestern Kern County and is mostly known as an oil town. Noerr said he had previous plans to see Congressman Kevin McCarthy Tuesday night and that he would bring up the issue with him.
MTC said in its news release the Bureau of Prisons determined $100 million was needed in upgrades to the facility, which forced the closure. However, MTC feels alternatives to closing the facility are available and wants the federal government to reverse its decision.

Once you are released from federal prison in most scenarios you end up in a federal halfway house for a period of time. While living in the halfway house you are expected to find and maintain employment. Finding a job fresh out of prison definitely comes with its own set of hardship but when you add the additional rules of what the halfway house requires it can feel like an impossible battle.

I have been getting several emails from inmates asking about Federal Halfway House's possibly closing. My first thought was this sounds like an inmate rumor. I did a little research on it, what I found out is that this is completely true. This is due to the Trump administration implementing BOP budget cuts. In addition, there are talks of reducing the amount of halfway house giving to just 30-60 days. What can you do?
