While at an event, Jim and Susan give the bears lots of fun things to do. This is PVC pipe and they put treats in them. Marshmallows,m chicken strips, peanuts - all different things, and the bears have to work to get them out. Jenny taught herself this nifty technique all by herself! She lays on her back, and uses her feet to spin and flip the pipe all different ways. It’s really quite amazing!

Randy is certainly giving Leo a run for “MOST ADORABLE BEAR IN THE POND” award for this year! And is it just me, or did it look like he was about to fall asleep sitting up?

Recently, we’ve been discussing the differences in how the bears “play fight” with each other as compared to how gentle they are when playing with Jim or Susan. Here is a good example of the larger bears at play. This is Rosie, a female Kodiak brown bear, and Randy, a male Syrian brown bear (he has the white hair around his neck area as do all Syrian bears) playing by the pond. Watch until the end where you will see them give each other some really incredible swipes. A swipe that that could take a human’s head off, but it barely phases the other bear. You’ve never seen the bears swipe like that, with that sort of strength, at Susan or Jim. They are very well aware of the differences and they are careful not to hurt them.

We also released a whole bunch of rabbits this week! Rabbits can be so very fragile, but Susan is amazing at saving their lives.

Leo! Out for some morning grazing.
A lot of you have asked how he is. Leo is doing much better lately. Because of mating season, we held off trying to combine him with another bear (like Sonya) after the first attempt failed. We will try again as mating season is starting to wrap up, but it is very difficult to introduce two ADULT bears. Even bears that have lived next to each other their whole lives. So it may be that this won’t work, but we will likely try again in a few weeks and see if Leo is sufficiently past his initial grieving period and if Sonya is through her mating period. We will keep you posted.
