Don’t Go Down the Rabbit Hole Critical thinking, as we’re taught to do it, isn’t helping in the fight against misinformation.
For an academic, Michael Caulfield has an odd request: Stop overthinking what you see online.
Mr. Caulfield, a digital literacy expert at Washington State University Vancouver, knows all too well that at this very moment, more people are fighting for the opportunity to lie to you than at perhaps any other point in human history.
Misinformation rides the greased algorithmic rails of powerful social media platforms and travels at velocities and in volumes that make it nearly impossible to stop. That alone makes information warfare an unfair fight for the average internet user. But Mr. Caulfield argues that the deck is stacked even further against us. That the way we’re taught from a young age to evaluate and think critically about information is fundamentally flawed and out of step with the chaos of the current internet. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoKAuOaJAOo

The following article, Sarah Silverman Proposes National Divorce Between Conservatives And Liberals, was first published on Big League Politics.
Leftist entertainment industry operative Sarah Silverman proposed on her podcast the idea of a national divorce between conservatives and liberals, with a requirement that conservatives must get vaccinated to travel to the liberal zones of a hypothetical post-Union.
“I mean, this may be a negative thought but, or maybe a positive one, I don’t know, but, if people aren’t getting along, uh, like in relationship, they break up you know?” Silverman stated. “So like why don’t we just finally just realize that this, these states aren’t working and like, divide up into like two or three countries? It’ll be like USA 1 and USA 2.”
Silverman offered conservatives the possibility of claiming “USA 1,” and added, “and we’ll be allies. And you’ll come over here and we’ll go over there, and you know when you come to certain, many times when you go to a different country you have to get a vaccine.”
Silverman might be overestimating the extent to which these two hypothetical countries would be “allies,” but her general proposition is also being echoed by some conservatives and patriots who no longer want to share the same Union with authoritarian leftists.
Recently, many on the Right celebrated the encroaching potentiality of two different Americas when officials from the majority of U.S. states expressed some form of Resistance to Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate on employees of companies that employ more than 100 people. Regardless of whether or not a formal national divorce is feasible at this point in history, it’s clear that red states and possibly red counties will increasingly fight federal overreach in the aftermath of the disputed 2020 presidential election.

July 2019 E-Action: Tell the Senate to Save the Internet
A free and fair press is essential to a healthy democracy. Support your local newspaper—subscribe! But know who owns the paper…. As for cable news:
—
The “fourth estate” is a term that originated during the 19th century. The term can be traced back to England when three groups or estates made up Parliament: the nobility, the clergy, and the common people. The “public press” often weighed in on public affairs and because of this influence they were referred to as the “fourth estate”.
Today, all branches of the news media, including the Internet, have been called the fourth estate. However, stories today that pass as newsworthy differ dramatically from news stories covered by the three major news networks during the 1960s and 1970s: ABC, NBC, and CBS.
During the Vietnam War, it was not unusual to see photos or video of soldiers mortally wounded. Viewers rarely saw any graphic war coverage during the Iraq War and Persian Gulf conflict in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, few news stations report on casualties resulting from the global conflicts we are currently involved in, such as Afghanistan.
Cover of book - Manufacturing Consent by Noam ChomskyWhy is that? Soldier casualties today are just as significant as the loss of our loved ones that occurred during previous wars and conflicts. My thoughts on this are that in many cases, the fourth estate has been, as Noam Chomsky would say, “manufacturing consent.” Or, to put it in different terms, when it comes to wars and conflicts, media takes the stance of “out of sight, out of mind.”
An even more troubling aspect of the news media today is the ownership of our sources of news. A chart in a 2018 Fortune magazine listed hundreds of news outlets and their owners. Basically, according to Fortune Magazine, all were owned or controlled by six corporations: Comcast, Disney, 21st Century Fox, Viacom, ATT, and CBS.
A Forbes article broke down ownership a bit more stating that 15 billionaires pretty much own most of the media and newsprint in the USA. Noam Chomsky once said, “He who controls the media controls the mind of the public.”
Malcom X said of the media, “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty more innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”

Elon Musk appears to be the latest target of a notorious group of hackers.
The politically charged hacker group Anonymous posted a video blasting the SpaceX and Tesla CEO for “constantly trolling” cryptocurrency markets.
“For the past several years you have enjoyed on of the most favorable reputations of anyone in the billionaire class because you have tapped into the desire that many of us have to live in a world with electric cars and space exploration,” a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask with a digitally altered voice said in the video, posted to Twitter Saturday.
“Recently… people are beginning to see you as another narcissistic rich due who is desperate for attention.”
The message came after Musk posted yet another cryptic tweet about Bitcoin that devalued the asset Friday.
“Millions of retail investors were really counting on their crypto gains to improve their lives,” the figure in the video said. “Of course, they took the risk upon themselves when they invested, and everyone knows to be prepared for volatility in crypto, but your tweets this week show a clear disregard for the average working person.”
Anonymous, which has been linked to cyber attacks on police departments, politicians, financial companies and religions, went on to issue what appeared to be a vague warning to the tycoon.
“You may think you are the smartest person in the room, but now you have met your match. We are Anonymous! We are legion. Expect us,” the person said.
Musk did not address the thinly veiled threat directly, but about 20 minutes after the group’s post, Musk tweeted: “Don’t kill what you hate, Save what you love.”
