How the Original Frog Prince Fairytale Was a Feminist Story
Did you know that the Frog Prince story was changed? During the 19th century the Brothers Grimm changed the way the story was resolved and what caused the frog’s transformation. The original story has a refreshing feminist undertone to it. On a psychological level, this original frog-bashing assertiveness is far more satisfying than the frog kissing business. For the psychology of women, this original version of the fairytale is more accurate. You can kiss a dozen frogs but if they keep being frogs, it’s not because you haven’t found the right frog but because you are not treating it right. The original Frog Prince story teaches young women a critical aspect of creating healthy relationships: assertiveness and boundaries. It is a feminist story par excellence.
It is easy to think of the archetype of the Shadow Donald Trump but the shadow archetype requires a subject of which it is the shadow. Could Trump in fact be the social justice Shadow? From the point of view of Jung Trump is clearly no accident from the point of view of depth psychology (aka Jungian psychology). For Jung the Shadow archetype was the compensation to our excessively polished public face (the persona archetype); it is the aspects of our authentic self that we deny in order to fit into society. In a time where social justice is such a dominant theme in the zeitgeist, the psychology of social justice becomes very important to study. Such brightness and goodness as make up the persona of the social justice movement must cast a dark shadow indeed and this may be exactly what we see in Trump and the Shadow of his movement. Trump Jordan Peterson and Carl Jung might say is the inevitable compensation of the collective unconscious to the light of the social justice movement.
In this episode of The Living Philosophy we are going to explore this topic deeper by comparing the situation with Game of Thrones where in the vein of Jung Cersei Lannister shows us a similar psychodrama of the Shadow archetype in her march from the church of the Sept and the High Sparrow to the Red Keep in one of tvs most famous scenes.

The Sartre Camus friendship was a meeting between two of 20th-century philosophy's giants. They first became friends during WW2 but it was doomed to fail. The conflict of Camus vs. Sartre boils down to their political philosophy. The philosophy of Albert Camus was one of peace and valued the individual human being; the philosophy of Jean Paul Sartre on the other hand emphasised the need to end oppression and colonialism.
Sartre and Camus falling out was one of the major events of 20th century philosophy. It represented two paths forward in the world. In this episode of the living philosophy we explore the friendship of Camus and Sartre and the bitter feud that brought it to an end.

The View From Above is a Stoic philosophy out of Marcus Aurelius's Meditations book. It is tied in with an idea from Plato - to view people and the world from above from a height in order to achieve the correct pathos of distance as Nietzsche would say to feel elevated enough to take stock and have perspective. This episode is part personal reflection on an experience I had whilst out on a walk the other day and part philosophical reflection on the words of Marcus Aurelius. Part Stoic quote part Stoic affirmations the View From Above draws on Marcus Aurelius quotes to give you a more cosmic perspective on life's challenges to wash away the mud of life.

God is dead is one of the most notorious lines in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. But it is commonly mistaken for a modernist sentiment proclaiming the death of Christianity’s God. But that is not what Nietzsche intended. It was not a declaration of atheism; atheism was already a trivial point of view (if still controversial) by the end of the 19th century. Nietzsche was not echoing a common sentiment but pushing beyond to its unseen implications.
Nietzsche was pioneering the postmodern perspective. This is obvious from the aphorism it occurs in. In The Gay Science Nietzsche tells the parable of the madman who declares the death of God. The madman’s audience are not religious believers or members of the Church as one would expect from a declaration of God’s death. The audience was a crowd of jeering non-believers. This points to the real intention of Nietzsche’s statement.
In this episode we are going to explore the meaning of this statement in light of this insight and see what exactly Nietzsche meant by his provocative statement that God is dead and we have killed him.

What is the Greta Thunberg archetype? Greta has become the embodiment of the archetypal Divine Child and as such is the perfect symbol for the green Global Warming movement. The nature of the archetypal child is to see things simply untainted by the complexities of the world. Its nature is to question the ways of the world and to see how the world could be without the tinting of the status quo which we get as we become adults. Greta Thunberg ticks all of these boxes in a way that Al Gore or any other figurehead can. She cuts past the complexities of modern life which we use as excuses to fall into inertia. With the simple vision of a child-like she cuts past all these excuses and reminds us that this is an existential threat to the whole species and burying our head in the sand will not make it go away. This is the innocent vision of truth of Jungian psychology's Divine Child archetype.
In this episode we explore the archetypal connections of Greta and why she has become the perfect embodiment of the climate change Extinction Rebellion movement.

Stoicism tells us that most things are unimportant for happiness. These are the Indifferents and include everything from wealth, health and fame. The only thing which matters for happiness is virtue i.e. living the good life, the eudaimonic life. The life of the Stoic sage strives after eudaimonia which is a life of virtue. As long as you are living in this way, nothing else matters and nothing else can harm the Stoic philosopher. We find this lesson in Epictetus, in Marcus Aurelius, in Seneca and Musonius Rufus. It is core to the Stoic path.
This is what we are going to examine in this episode of The Living Philosophy where we take unpack philosophical subjects and explore the psychology of this human condition.

It's rare that you encounter a fresh take on a path as well-trodden as happiness. I've read a lot of books on the topic and I have to say that Ryan Bush's take is fresh and yet simultaneously ancient. I think this is part of the reason I'm so enthusiastic about it: it integrates a trend in academic philosophy that I've yet to see anyone else talk about: Virtue Ethics. This is an ethical approach to philosophy that goes all the way back to the ancients especially Socrates, Aristotle and the Stoics. Bush integrates this old esteemed tradition with very 21st century fields like Cognitive Science and neuroscience to produce a thought-provoking map of the good life that I can't recommend highly enough.

People still believe that Orson Welle's performance of the War of the Worlds triggered a mass hysteria. It's become the quintessential fake news story. In truth the War of the Worlds fake news story is itself fake news. In this episode we explore what really happened, how much hysteria there was and why people didn't actually believe they were experiencing a Martian invasion. We also explore why people were so happy to believe in this hysteria and what it tells us about our modern post-truth fake news crisis.
