Falange supporters clash with police as Primo de Rivera reburied
It has been 120 years since the birth of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, and 87 years since his execution, but his was an ideology that lives long in the memory. Dozens of his supporters gathered to pay their respects as his body was finally laid to rest, again, in a private ceremony in the San Isidro cemetery, but not to pay their respects to his family, who had blocked their attendance. Primo de Rivera had been entombed in the ‘Valley of the Fallen’ mausoleum in Madrid, but newly passed rules regarding the glorification of fascism meant his remains were exhumed in 2019.

As the funeral turned violent, chaos erupted between the police and the Falangists, an echo of the revolt that sparked the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Many marched, some performed fascist salutes, while others fought with police, as if the Falange movement were still alive today.
