Repair Project #5 - Mamiya Lens
Last summer I made a quick tour around Germany and met up with NewEinstein for a bit of hiking and sight seeing. He showed me an e-bay score of his: a Mamiya camera and some lenses. But one of the lenses - a 300mm prime lens - was damaged: the focus control would spin on the lens body without moving anything. Since we both agreed that it couldn't get much worse, he allowed me to try and fix it.

Metal (mini) Lathe
I always wanted to own some tools for metal work, besides a drill press. But the cost was always a prohibitive factor in those plans. This year, my birthday present to myself was one of these infamous mini lathes. This way, I got two for one: a restoration project and a new tool!
Well, what can one expect from a lathe set that includes a slew of tools for 800 Euro delivered? I was about to find out!
The quick and dirty of my findings is: if they were to offer these as a kit, go for it! The pre-built versions are not bad as such, but since you need to tune almost everything, depending on your goals, it would save a LOT of time if you didn't have to disassemble it first... maybe the manufacturer could shave off another bit as a kit? Just random thoughts...
Overall I am quite happy with what I got for my money - but that's me... a cartoon cat who's happy to tell his human assistant to "get it fixed up and ready" :) If you want a lathe that is ready to use from the box... these are not for you.

Also, had I known that the shade was enemal, I would probably have left it alone. Workshop Project #26 - Precision ES-500
Where do I start? "Precision" is the name of a US company that seemed to be rather huge in the radio and TV repair component business in the 1940s and 1950s. I first learned about them when I was just looking for a "VTVM". I found one, the "Model 98" and the industrial design and huge meter movement spoke to me. Since then, I tried to get my paws on as many of their devices from the same general timeframe as possible. The E-200-C frequency generator had a "sample application" in the manual, that included a scope that looked interesting: The ES-500. And after a bit of waiting, I actually managed to find and procure one! Woohoo! But like all the other similar devices, it was... well... not doing so well? Join in and find out why it took over a year to finish this one project!
NOTE 1: I know, it's "Precision Apparatus" not "Precison Instruments", but the meter movement of the VTVM said "Precision Instruments" - which seems to be a department or subsidiary; and that name stuck in my head, so I'll probably misattribute it for some time...
NOTE 2: The video is edited in a way that makse sense, not strictly chronologically. Thus it is normal for components that I already fixed and cleaned, to appear broken and dirty again in a "later" scene. Strict chronological order would make it a bit confusing to watch.

I got some vacuum tube based projects in my pipeline and might get more of those over time... so I decided to go for a "tube tester", which were quite common in the days of tubes. There are different categories of those: simple short and heater testers that might include a "yes/no" light indicator to show that they are doing something; on the other end of the spectrum are complete classification devices that can accurately measure tubes. Neither of which makes sense for my intended purpose. I want a bit more than a pure yes/no result but I don't need a full lab setup either. So the third category in the middle was my choice: an emission tester. These heat up the tube and put a current through it, connected to an analog readout to show how good or bad the tube is, compared to its "should" current.
As a complete random coincidence, I found a Prcision Instruments - or Precision Apparatus? I've seen both names on plates and documents - model 612; It is a rather versatile device in this category and it fits the Precision VTVM that I restored last year perfectly! Exact same case! Down to the two random holes in mine, which are used in this one, so now things make sense!
This is part two (of two) and in this one I'm finishing the assembly of the tester and show how the buttons are used to measure things; except the capacitor test, since I'm not sure it is all that helpful, and I don't have any test subjects around right now;
A note about the "permanent" magnet issue: I am aware that hard knocks and heat might "weaken" them, so I took care that the dremel cleaning wouldn't get them hot to the touch... I am at a loss why they lost so much strength. But the added rare earth magnets do the job nicely. It is back to linear 0-2-4mA display characteristics.
Also, some of the contacts where so much oxydized that even a Dremel and wire brush wouldn't help: I had to use a file and sandpaper for some...
I saw @Mr Carlson's Lab use one of these recently (an older video, I just saw it after I got my version here) - would love to hear what he thinks of my work; even if it doesn't quite measure up to his standard...

Is this really the 13th project? To be released on the 13th of the month? By a black cat nontheless? I hope you are not supersticous!
The Radio popped up on one of my frequent e-bay searches and sparked my interest. It contains a small (about 2.5") CRT and TV tuner along with the typical tape deck and FM/AM Radio receiver.It was rather dirty, as to be expected from what can be described as a "yard sale type" of listing, but I liked it and wanted it in better shape again. I didn't notice the missing bezel on the original listing, so I had to hunt down some pictures that showed the missing piece. Over time, I came to the conclusion that silk screen printing would be good to make a close reproduction of it. I hesitated for the other printed stuff, but trying to remove ages of grime with alcohol yielded no success and when switching to acetone... well, the road was set then.
Doing the usual cleaning and recapping too of course. And if I ever get a hold of a decent frequency analyser, I'll align the receiver circuits too. The FM one is only slightly off to begin with, and I don't really have any use for the TV one, other than the occasional demonstration to friends maybe.

Time Clock - Restoration Project #47 - Part 1
A very common question I get almost everywhere is "how much time do you spend on the projects?" - and I have no idea. I do have a fully blown phobia of timekeeping aparently. And yes, that's a problem for my day job too. But it led to an interesting eBay search and here's the result: A vintage time clock!
Like so many nifty gadgets, it's of US origin and takes the wrong voltage/frequency to run. And even if I don't want to hook it up permanently, I still want it to work for whenever I do fancy it for whatever purpose. So it was clear from the get go that I needed to do same modifications...
In this part 1, I'm taking things apart, start the cleaning and come up with solutions for various ailments of the device. Part 2 will see the assembly and a bit more explanation of the punch mechanism.
The clock was missing any identification markings about model or series numbers, but had a sticker for "Cincinnati Time Clock Co." on the side. Not sure if they just serviced it or made it...
