At today's press conference, Commander in Chief of the Marxist-Leninist EFF, Julius Malema, announced that his party will mobilize people at every level to paralyze the country, promising the "mother of all shutdowns." The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is joining the protest which is a response to a multitude of crises hitting South Africa, including collapsing infrastructure that has prompted the government practice of rolling electricity blackouts known as load-shedding. Other demands include jobs for the unemployed at the living wage, lower costs of living, an end to crime and violence against women and children, re-nationalization of critical entities like South African Airways and an expansion of the public sector. South Africa's inflation rate has risen to as high as nearly 8 percent in recent months, according to data from Trading Economics. Another nationwide day of strikes and protests, involving hundreds of thousands of people are taking place across France on Thursday as the population continues resisting President Emmauel Macron's bill to increase the retirement age from 62 to 64. Trade unions have predicted that Thurday's ninth national day of action against the bill will draw huge crowds and rolling strikes by workers, including garbage collectors will continue. In recent days huge piles of trash have built up in Paris while oil deliveries into France have also been disrupted. Teachers will also walk out while train travel and airports will be severely impacted. Polls have consistently shown that around 70% of the French public oppose Macron's plans with protests against the reforms beginning in mid January. However protests have grown following Macron's decision to force the bill through the National Assembly without a vote last Friday. UNRWA is the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, providing basic needs to over 5.9 million people. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, denounced the fund suspension as collective punishment of Palestinians. The accusation stems from reports by the Israeli secret service, while UNRWA has not completed its investigation. UNRWA operates 58 refugee camps in the Middle East and runs 706 schools and 140 health facilities. In essence, UNRWA is the most crucial support for displaced Palestinians.
