Some people struggle using GPG or PGP encryption. Some people have difficulty understanding how you use private and public keys pairs in order to send encrypted emails and being able to decrypt emails that are sent to you. There is another way to send and receive encrypted emails on your Mac and that is to use certificates that you can get from places like StartSSL or from Comodo. It can be a little bit of messing around to get the account and then the certificate organised, downloaded and installed. Once you do have this certificate on your Mac keychain then I can assure you that it is extremely easy to use.

To use these certificates after you have them installed, all you have to do is to exchange emails with the person you want to have secure communications with. You send an email that has been signed with your certificate to your recipient. Doing this automatically sends the key that your recipient will use to send you an encrypted email. When your recipient of your digitally signed email replies back to you they will be able to reply with the email encrypted. They will also be signing that email and that will give you the certificate or key that you need to be able to send them encrypted emails. This all works automatically in the Apple mail application and you don't need to do anything else to send and receive encrypted emails in that application with that person.

You can test to see if the emails are encrypted by checking out the email in a position on its journey through the Internet. In this video I show you that if you open up the email in a web-based email such as Gmail, then you will not be able to read that email due to the encryption.

It is possible to send certificates to your iOS device so that you can read encrypted email on your iOS device also. I will be showing you how to do this in the next video.
