The markets expected the consumer price index to come in at 8.1 percent. This morning, the CPI came in at 8.3 percent. Now, investors are bracing for further interest rate hikes from the Federal reserve. Core inflation rose from 5.9% in July to 6.3% in August. Food inflation is the highest since 1979. Markets are falling as the Fed is nowhere near done raising rates. The Dow is down 4%. The NASDAQ is down 3%. BTC is down 5%. Ether is down 6%. Hotter than expected inflation is a signal that another 75 basis point interest-rate hike next week is now nailed on. A new survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers indicates that 50% of the 722 firms surveyed anticipate a reduction in headcount in the next six to 12 months. Executives are focused on cutting costs, as they see their profits getting squeezed by supply-chain issues and inflation. As layoffs and hiring freezes continue to mount, some analysts suspect that the rosy jobs numbers earlier this month were skewed by people getting second jobs.
