CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, A RUSTIC CHIVALRY
Cavalleria Rusticana is a masterpiece of Italian verismo, a movement that sought to portray the reality of everyday life of the popular classes, with their passions, conflicts and tragedies. The opera, composed by Pietro Mascagni with libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, is based on a story by the novelist Giovanni Verga, set in a Sicilian village at the end of the 19th century. The opera premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 17 May 1890, as a result of a competition organised by the publisher Sonzogno, who wanted to promote young composers. Mascagni won the first prize with this work, which was a resounding success from its first performance, and which gave him international fame. The opera is divided into two parts: an instrumental introduction and a single dramatic act. The introduction is a symphony that summarises the musical themes of the work, and anticipates the climate of tension and violence that will unfold on stage. The single act consists of seven scenes, which follow one another without interruption. The plot revolves around a love triangle between Santuzza, Turiddu and Lola. Santuzza is a young peasant girl who is in love with Turiddu, a villager who has returned from the army. Turiddu, however, is obsessed with Lola, his old love, who has married Alfio, a carter. Lola, for her part, is a flirtatious and capricious woman, who cheats on her husband with Turiddu. The action takes place during the morning of Easter. Santuzza tries to convince Turiddu to love her and leave Lola, but he rejects her. Santuzza, spurned, reveals to Alfio his wife’s adultery. Alfio swears revenge and challenges Turiddu to a duel to the death. Turiddu bids farewell to his mother, Mamma Lucia, and accepts the challenge. The end is tragic: Turiddu dies at the hands of Alfio, while Santuzza and Mamma Lucia cry inconsolably. Mascagni’s music is intense and expressive, reflecting the emotions and contrasts of the characters. The opera combines popular and folkloric elements, such as Sicilian songs and religious marches, with others more innovative and modern, such as the use of leitmotiv and chromatic harmony. The orchestration is rich and varied, highlighting the role of wind and percussion instruments. The opera has several memorable arias and choruses, such as Turiddu’s “Siciliana”, Santuzza’s “Voi lo sapete”, Turiddu and Lola’s “Viva il vino spumeggiante”, the chorus’ “Regina Coeli” or the emotional orchestral “Intermezzo”. The final scene is especially dramatic and moving, with the heartbreaking cry so typical of Sicily: “Hanno ammazzato Compare Turiddu!” Cavalleria Rusticana is a short but intense opera that does not leave the viewer indifferent. It is a work that shows the strength of love and fate, but also the cruelty and violence of rural Sicilian society. It is a work that deserves to be seen and heard with attention and respect.
