In May, Sotheby's may see a record-breaking sale of Louise Bourgeois's "Spider" sculpture.
Sotheby's New York will be selling one of Louise Bourgeois's iconic "Spider" sculptures at auction next month. The cost might be the highest ever recorded.
Price estimates for Spider (1996), as the work is formally known, range from $30 million to $40 million. For Bourgeois, whose previous record sale price was $28 million (without costs), even the modest estimate would set a new record. In May of 2019, another Spider from 1996 set the record at Christie's.
It has the potential to break records as the most expensive work of female artists ever sold at auction if it fetches the high estimate or higher. Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed (1936) sold for a record $44.4 million (without fees) in 2014 when it was purchased by Walmart heiress Alice Walton.
According to Sotheby's, Spider is owned by Fundaco Ita, the philanthropic arm of the Brazilian bank Ita Unibanco. The bank's owner and co-founder, Olavo Setubal, purchased it after seeing it displayed during the Bienal de So Paulo in 1996.
Like the rest of the renowned ensemble, it stands 10 feet tall and 18 feet broad. Bourgeois claims that the spiders are metaphors for tender themes like parenthood, which may give arachnophobes the creeps due to the spiders' long, slender legs.
How did a spider get here? As the creator once put it, "Because my best friend was my mother, and she was careful, smart, patient, calming, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat, and as useful as a spider."
The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Dia Art Foundation in New York, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and the Tate Modern in London are just some of the major cultural organizations that have acquired Bourgeois's spiders for their permanent collections.
"The Spider has become a global icon," said David Galperin, head of contemporary art at Sotheby's in New York, in a statement. Because of its widespread recognition in the world's cultural institutions, it is common knowledge that "everyone knows it." To quote one critic: "It is not only a shining example of modern sculpture, but it has also become an important symbol in modern culture around the world."

Three years ago, a painting nearly sold for $1,600 at an auction, but it has now been revealed as a lost work by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the renowned Italian Baroque painter. The Prado Museum in Spain recently announced that this work, titled Ecce Homo, will be unveiled to the public for the first time on May 27, according to a report from the Associated Press.
This piece, depicting Jesus Christ before his crucifixion as he is presented to the populace, is one of only 60 known paintings by Caravaggio. Historically, it was held in the private collection of Spain's King Phillip IV, the Prado states.
Originally, Ecce Homo was mistakenly attributed to José de Ribera, a follower of Caravaggio, and was set for auction in April 2021. However, the Prado intervened, leading to a halt in the auction and a prohibition on its export by Spanish officials due to the painting's important heritage.
The painting has been owned by a family in Madrid since the 19th century and was only identified after detailed analysis and restoration. The regional government of Madrid later authorized the family to sell the painting, which, as the Associated Press noted, could fetch tens of millions of dollars or more.
The painting's new, unidentified owner chose the Prado for its first public display. Managed by the Colnaghi art gallery since April 2021 and restored by expert Andrea Cipriani under the oversight of Madrid's regional authorities, Ecce Homo will be showcased until October before joining the museum's permanent collection for another four months.

In Greece, a protest against "Mafia-style" violence erupted when an archaeologist was hurt.
Protesting the horrific attack on a colleague in a suburb of the Greek capital, government archeologists gathered outside the Culture Ministry in Athens for five hours on Tuesday. It has been claimed that this attack is part of a larger trend of "mafia-style" violence against those whose duty it is to safeguard the country's historical artifacts.
Formerly reported injuries include "broken ribs and fractures to his nose and face" for 58-year-old archaeologist Manolis Psarrosan, who worked for the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades. Archaeologists speculate that the increase in Mykonos's visitor numbers contributed to the attack. Many potential construction projects in Greece are halted by archaeological agencies in order to protect the country's countless historical landmarks.
Psarrosan has been involved in a number of instances alleging infractions on Mykonos, such as "illegal buildings," and has been called as a witness in related trials. In addition, it has been useful in keeping tabs on the status of hotel and entertainment center construction permits. The archeological agency claims that certain island officials are too reluctant to expose criminal behavior involving the persons who bring tourists and revenue to the island. A team led by Psarrosan was looking into "random building activity in areas of archaeological interest" on two beaches in Mykonos.
The demonstrators have demanded that police provide greater safety for authorities and archaeologists conducting "contentious examinations."
"All islands have problems because of how much tourism has increased, but Mykonos is by far the worst," said Despina Koutsoumba, who heads up the archaeologists' group.

Tanabata, or the Star Festival, is a Japanese celebration with origins in the Chinese Qixi Festival.
