Before Umar ibn Khattab was converted to belief in Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth as the virgin-born Messiah he wanted Christians to renounce Jesus Christ and was a member of a Karaite sect whose doctrine came from a person mentioned in the Talmud called Plony Yeshu Ha-Notzri Ben Stada. They traced the origins of their faith back to Hud (Joktan) the son of Eber (Father of all the Hebrews) whose religion the Hanifian Abraham had returned to but that the children of Israel had lost again while in Egypt until it was re-introduced to Moses by a Midianite priest called Shuaib. This Plony Yeshu Ha-Notzri Ben Stada is the Karaite Jesus, the מסיח (Distraction) not the מושיע (Messias). Abdul Malik's solution to the Arab civil wars seems to have been to confuse the distinction between the two Jesuses with an outward acceptance of Jesus as the Messias but an inward understanding that Jesus was just a Distraction and that the real Messiah was the Caliph. Once the population had become disenchanted with the Caliphs, the Abbasids developed this idea into the Imamate.
