Sometimes you just have problems where you don't know the cause. Perhaps there are multiple causes and the problem developed incrementally, or perhaps the cause is related to a molar memory (a situation where the remembered emotion if you recall the cause is an away-from emotion, like anxiety and the forgotten emotion if you recall the cause is a towards emotion, like anger, and often the presenting current issue involves the towards emotion, so when you try to think about why you have the problem you don't consciously make the connection to the cause and so it is harder to treat).
This temporal exploration technique is best used for treating 'towards' based problems, like anger that could be impacting on stress or emotion levels during the day, making it harder to fall asleep at night. If you aren't relaxed at night because emotion levels were too high then you will find it more difficult to fall asleep. Likewise, if you are angry with someone or about something, this could trigger emotional thinking which makes it difficult to shut off and sleep, it could also trigger you to have anger thoughts which you don't act on, meaning you then can have highly emotional and excessive dreaming preventing deep recuperative sleep, so you wake up exhausted, even if you think you have had a good number of hours sleep.
