The cultural critic Christopher Lasch praised Harold Cruse and his book The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. Specifically, Lasch looked to Cruse as Lasch explored the need for the development of a working-class culture after WW2. In this video Derick Varn and Douglas Lain explore the limits of Cruse's conception of national identity even as they consider the reasons why Cruse felt compelled to seek out a black national culture in the United States.
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
Harvey Kaye, author of Take Hold of Our History: Make America Radical again, explains why the America Revolution was a real revolution and why today's radicals should aim at redeeming and recovering history.

On this episode of Convergences Adam from Acid Horizon is joined by Palestine Action activist and researcher Kieron Turner to discuss the work of Cedric Robinson and his landmark 1983 work Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition. We’re going to be covering Robinson’s life and work, his dialectical analysis of the historical and ideological phenomenon of Racial Capitalism, his critique of Marxist Historiography, and the life and history of the Black Radical Tradition. Also discussed is Robinson’s critique of the Eurocentric biases of certain Western Radicalisms, the critique of nationalist ideology, and his exposition of the Black Radical Tradition as the articulation of consciousness as a material force. That is, an emancipatory force of analysis, consciousness, and culture, as generated through the world historical experience and resistance of African peoples. Finally, we discuss the work of Palestine Action, which includes their ongoing campaign against the arms manufacturer Elbit Systems, which recently resulted in a weapons factory being shut down in Oldham, England. Kieron explains how Cedric Robinson’s thought has impacted his own work in theory and praxis, and how Robinson’s thought helps to orientate theory towards mass movements.

This episode of the Zero Books podcast is a conversation with the Lindsay Shepherd. Shepherd hit the Zeitgeist recently when she was reprimanded for showing her class an excerpt from a debate on gender pronouns that originally aired on the television program the Agenda. The program featured professor Jordan Peterson, who is scheduled to be a guest on this podcast next month, and Shepherd was told that by showing the clip from the program she'd committed an act of violence against transgendered students either in her class or on campus.
We’ve moved the Inside Zero Books podcast from the Zero Books blog to Patreon. This will make it easier to get the member’s only podcast on podcatchers. It also means that we’ll be repeating the first year of Inside Zero Books daily on our Patreon account. If you missed Inside Zero Books podcast the first time, or if you just want to hear the old episodes again, they’ll be available.
If you haven’t already you might pick up Anselm Jappe’s The Writing on the Wall or Stuart Walton’s Neglected or Misunderstood: Introducing Theodor Adorno. Reading Angela Nagle's Kill All Normies would also be a great way to bring in the New Year.
