Corll was born on December 24, 1939 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and moved to Houston with his family when he was a child. He was known to be a popular figure in his neighborhood, where he was well-liked by both children and adults. However, his behavior began to change in his teenage years, and he became increasingly interested in pornography and sadomasochism.
In 1964, Corll's mother divorced his father and moved to Colorado, taking Corll's younger brother with her. Corll remained in Houston, where he began working at the family-owned candy factory. It was through this job that he met two teenage boys, David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley, who would later become his accomplices in the murders.
Between 1970 and 1973, Corll, Brooks, and Henley lured young men and boys to Corll's apartment and then tortured, sexually assaulted, and murdered them. The victims' bodies were buried in various locations around Houston, including a boat shed owned by Corll's family.
The killings came to an end in 1973, when Henley, who had grown tired of participating in the murders, shot and killed Corll. He then called the police and led them to the burial sites of the victims.
The Candy Man killings were one of the most notorious cases of serial murder in American history, and the details of the crimes shocked the nation.
