I'm not talking about fillers, anti-wrinkle or fancy moisturisers, just sunscreen. The sun emits harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV) which can damage our skin. In particular it emits UV A rays which have longer wavelengths that can penetrate deep into the skin, and UV B rays which have shorter wavelength that penetrate near the surface of the skin. UVA is responsible for ageing our skin, as it sets off enzymes that can break down our natural collagen, leaving us looking weathered, depleted and wrinkly. UV B rays are responsible for causing changes in our skin DNA, meaning that with prolonged exposure, skin cancers can develop.
It's therefore vital to protect your skin from the suns rays for both medical and cosmetic purposes. But which sunscreen should you choose?
There are a vast array of sunscreens on the market. It's important to choose one that covers both UVA and UVB. You should also look at the SPF on the bottle. This gives an indicator for how much UVB can reach your skin. For example SPF 30 means 3.3% of UVB can reach your skin and SPF 50 means that 2% can reach. Ok it's not perfect, but it's a start. You should also wear protective clothing when out in the sun, such as a hat, shades, loose protective clothing and minimise your time outdoors when the UV is high, typically between 10am-3pm. You can also check the UV index on your phone, when it is 3 and above, you should take measures to protect yourself and limit exposure.
But how much should you apply?
Always follow the instructions on your sunscreen bottle. For an average adult, you should apply 5ml (teaspoon) for each part of your body, for example, 5ml for one arm, 5ml for the face and neck and so on. Re-application is also important, so always refer to the bottle as this can vary.
Over here in the Gold Coast, we have pop up stations that educate on how much sunscreen we are putting on - I tried this myself and I did pretty well, what do you think?

In today's episode I take you through what nasolabial lines are, how they appear and what can be done to treat them.
NASOLABIAL FOLDS
These are those folds that run alongside the sides of the nose to the corner of the mouth. Their presence is normal, however with time, they may deep leaving a saggy appearance.
HOW TO TREAT
There are several options that may be explored.
Non-permanent dermal fillers can be strategically used in this area to reduce the volume deficit.
The filler is strategically placed along the fold bearing in mind the underlying facial anatomy - including the facial artery. Treatment of the piriform fossa may also be included which lies at the root of the fold. Typically a needle or cannula may be used to reduce risks.
Other methods of treatment include fat transfers, thread lifts or face lifts.

In this episode we follow a patient through their SculpSure treatment targeting inner-thigh fat. Showing you how the treatment is carried out, the intensity levels of the heat and what to expect.

About Non-Surgical Fat Removal: https://youtu.be/5_YFEmHDJSQ

THE BASICS ON FAT
During our childhood and adolescence we have a set number of fat cells that remain with us throughout our adult life. It’s the changes in the volume of the fat cell that causes our weight to rise and fall.
The problem is that fat cells are unevenly distributed among our body so while diet and exercise does reduce the size of the cells it doesn't re-distribute them, leaving you with pockets of hard to shift areas.
This is the foundation that most fat reduction treatments are based on.
FAT HEATING
Stubborn pockets of fat are heated by laser up to 42-47C damaging the integrity of fat cells in the subcutaneous layer.
This form of fat reduction is licensed for areas including the tummy, love handles, back, inner and outer thighs and more recently the under chin area.
SculpSure takes 25 mins and 2 areas can be treated at the same time. It is reported that this method can reduce up to 24% of fat in a given area.
The main side effects that can occur, include a hot sensation which doesn’t burn but can feel pinching or tingling, bruising and firmness is also noted in the area following treatment.
Again, depending on the client 1-2 treatments are recommended with prices from A$600 per treatment. Full effects are to be noticed at 3 months.
CONCLUSION
In the next episode we catch up with our patient 3 months down the line and sit down one on one to find out how the post-treatment went and what results they experienced.
This video was taken with the patient's consent.

In today's episode I take you through my ultimate study tips to help you succeed in your examinations.
LEARNER TYPES
Take time to work out what kind of learner you are.
- Physical: where you carry out physical tasks to learn things better.
- Listener: those who absorb the most information from lectures or auditory seminars.
- Social: learn best in a group of people.
- Solitary learners: prefer to learn alone.
- Verbal: respond well to written or spoken words and make use of acronyms.
- Logical: Use their logic to learn effectively.
TIMING
Studying for an examination requires a certain degree of timing. Starting too early can lead to burn out, and starting to study too late can mean a lot of cramming which then can lead to missing out important subjects but also only stores information in the short term memory. For my own studies, I realised that allowing myself 10 weeks prior to my examinations gave me ample time to learn my modules. If, for example I had 7 modules, I would allocate one week per module leaving 3 extra weeks spare to complete any outstanding tasks but also to have a 'final' revision of all 7 modules briefly ready for the examination.
ROUTINE
Give your self a daily schedule. Allocate time during the day to study and reward yourself with breaks once you have achieved something. Don't forget to get outside and remain active. Smelling some fresh air can help to keep you revitalised and feel more alert for when you do get back to studying. Be sure to fuel your body with healthy food. This is not only important for your physical health but also for your mental health. Snacking on unhealthy fat-laden foods will make you feel lethargic and less energetic having a negative impact on your ability to study. Instead keep hydrated with water, fresh fruit and veg and have your healthy dose of protein each day. As well as keeping your food sources up, be sure to have a good night's sleep everyday, sleeping helps up to remember what we have learned throughout the day but it also gives you the chance to recharge your batteries ready for the next day.
NOTE KEEPING
This will have to be what's best for you, however, I found that by keeping short concise bullet points for notes was more effective than trying to learn long prose answers. You may wish to write those bullet points on a flash card or, if like me you're a visual learner - mind maps. As an example, I would put the topic in the centre of page and branch out important information in the form of bullet points. From here, I highlight the different sub-topics with coloured highlighter pens. When it came to examination time, I would be able to think back to my mind map and colours and be able to recite those important bullet points when required.
REPETITON
We learn by repeating actions over and over again. This is thanks to a scientific process called synaptic consolidation which is where the neurones - our information carriers - actually get stronger the more we repeat a memory.
TEST
You may find it useful to have a dress-rehearsal of what your examination will be like. As a medical student, we would ask the previous years for practice examination questions and some would also be provided to us by the medical school. If you don't have access to practice questions, you could try to explain a topic to your colleagues, this could be a useful technique if you are a social learner.
ENJOY
If you have managed to study effectively then your examination period should be a time where you can 'show off' your knowledge and show case all your hard work. If you don't manage to pass this time, don't fear, there will always be another opportunity.

Wow! What a great result, as you can see our yummy mummy has taken nicely to her new lips. Starting from a thin upper lip to natural looking full plump lips, you can see a real difference. In our follow up 2 weeks later, you can see that the inflammation has settled and she's looking gorgeous.
This video demonstrates two injecting methods, linear threading and vertical lines.
- Linear threading injects along the lips to give definition and volume. It's also noted as one of the more comfortable injecting techniques for patients.
- Vertical lines are used to make the lips more plump and if desired giving a more pouty look.
