Adolf Hitler a laissé à la postérité l'image d'un stratège militaire hors pair. Et pourtant, aveuglé par l'orgueil et son idéologie mortifère, il a fait preuve d'erreurs tactiques manifestes...
L'invasion foudroyante de l'Europe occidentale (Belgique, Pays-Bas et France), déclenchée le 10 mai 1940, a marqué les mémoires. Pourtant, dès cette campagne victorieuse, le dictateur nazi montre ses limites. Alors que le plan échafaudé par le général Erich von Manstein a conduit à l’encerclement des troupes françaises et britanniques dans la poche de Dunkerque, le Führer, par frilosité, manque l’occasion d’écraser définitivement ses ennemis. Néanmoins galvanisé par cet exploit qui n’est pas le sien, il lance une nouvelle guerre éclair à l’Est. Le 22 juin 1941, 3,5 millions de soldats allemands déferlent sur l'URSS, accompagnés par les Einsatzgruppen chargés de l’extermination des Juifs. Là encore, de l'enlisement du siège de Leningrad à l'offensive ratée de Koursk en passant par les batailles de Moscou et de Stalingrad, où ses troupes butent sur le terrible hiver russe et la résistance acharnée de l’Armée rouge, Hitler, aveuglé par l'orgueil et son idéologie mortifère, ruine par ses erreurs tactiques l’avantage colossal initialement acquis.
Entre 1884 et 1915, le Sud-Ouest africain fut sous protectorat de l’Allemagne.
Christel Fomm lève le voile sur l’histoire méconnue de cette possession allemande où eut lieu, entre 1904 et 1908, une guerre sans merci contre les autochtones, le premier véritable génocide planifié du XXe siècle.
À partir d’enquêtes menées auprès de descendants Héréro et Nama, et en se référant aux lettres échangées entre les chefs de tribus pendant la guerre, Christel Fomm livre des connaissances précieuses sur les changements sociaux imposés par cette colonisation brutale, et qui perdurent aujourd’hui dans la vie quotidienne du peuple namibien.
Le 28 mai 2021, l’Allemagne a reconnu le caractère génocidaire du massacre des Héréros et des Namas.

La première conséquence de la crise fut la seconde guerre mondiale. On sait que sans la crise, Adolf Hitler ne serait jamais parvenu au pouvoir.

À la fin du XIXe siècle, les patrons éclairés découvrent que l’ouvrier fait partie lui aussi du capital de l’entreprise. C’est la naissance de la diététique, de l’ergonomie, de la gymnastique ouvrière. Toutefois le travail à la chaîne, inventé dès 1871 aux Abattoirs de Chicago, peine à s’imposer. Ce n’est qu’après la grande boucherie de 1914-1918 que la rationalisation de la production et les techniques de “management scientifique” comme le taylorisme se généralisent malgré une violente résistance du monde ouvrier. Celui-ci apparaît profondément fracturé, alors que la révolution russe a fait naître l’espoir d’une révolution socialiste mondiale. En Allemagne, les réformistes sociaux-démocrates ont écrasé dans le sang les tentatives d’insurrection de 1919-1920. Les fascistes et les nazis s’engouffrent dans la brèche. Aidés par les crises et la montée du chômage, ils s’emparent du pouvoir, en Italie dès 1922, en Allemagne en 1933. Prétendant réaliser la synthèse du socialisme et du nationalisme au nom d’un travailleur mythique, ils proclament “la fin de la lutte des classes”.

Dans les rues de Jérusalem, on les reconnaît à leurs longs costumes et grands chapeaux noirs. Leurs épouses portent perruques et jupes sous les genoux. Ces ultra-orthodoxes juifs prônent une lecture fondamentaliste de la Torah et refusent la société moderne. Ils forment une petite communauté radicale, très fermée, hermétique même, dont l’influence pèse de plus en plus sur la société israélienne. C’est pour la première fois un témoignage troublant, un document rare, un portrait d’hommes, de femmes et de leurs très nombreux enfants, dont les projets sont une menace contre les principes démocratiques de l’Etat d’Israël.
Du Moyen Âge aux révoltes populaires qui agitent aujourd’hui la France, l’Allemagne et le Royaume-Uni, une passionnante histoire comparée de l’impôt. Arrivée au pouvoir en 1979, Margaret Thatcher applique les théories économiques de Hayek : privatisations, retour à l’"État minimum", baisse des impôts sur les revenus les plus élevés et les entreprises.
Si les mineurs en grève échouent à la faire plier, c’est sur la "poll tax", une taxe d’habitation identique pour tous, que la Dame de fer finira par trébucher. Dans l’Allemagne réunifiée, les citoyens de l’Est, soumis à la fois à l’impôt et aux conséquences du démantèlement de leur système social, souffrent du passage à l’économie de marché. Dans une France elle aussi submergée par la vague néolibérale et le creusement des inégalités, la CSG (contribution sociale généralisée), vouée à financer la Sécurité sociale, entaille le principe de la progressivité. La construction européenne, avec la libre circulation des capitaux et la monnaie unique, met en concurrence les systèmes fiscaux nationaux. C’est le boom des niches – et de l’optimisation – fiscales. Victimes des délocalisations, puis des politiques d’austérité nées de la crise de 2008, de nombreux Européens basculent dans la précarité et, pour certains, dans le populisme.
Consentement et évitement
"Gilets jaunes", partisans du Brexit, perdants de la réunification : avec pour point de départ ces colères qui traduisent, souvent sur fond de contestation de l’impôt, la crise de nos démocraties, ce documentaire de Xavier Villetard (André Malraux, l’épreuve du pouvoir), coécrit avec l’historien Gérard Noiriel, remonte le cours des luttes qui ont opposé, depuis le Moyen Âge, les peuples français, allemand et britannique à leurs gouvernants en matière fiscale. Entre privilège des puissants et ambitions redistributives, entre consentement et évitement, ces deux chapitres mêlent archives et éclairages (d’anciens ministres, comme George Osborne, Éric Woerth ou Wolfgang Schäuble, de députés, d’inspecteurs des finances, d’économistes…) pour décrypter la tumultueuse histoire d’un outil qui est le miroir des métamorphoses de l’État et de la société.

Ce deuxième épisode, de 1927 à 1954, est celui de l’affrontement. Que ce soit à travers la plume de l’Algérien Kateb Yacine, qui découvre à 15 ans, en 1945, lors du massacre de Sétif, que la devise républicaine française, tout juste rétablie, ne vaut pas pour tout le monde, ou celle de la poétesse Sarojini Naidu, proche de Gandhi, qui verra en 1947, dans le bain de sang de la partition de l'Inde, se briser son rêve de fraternité, un vent de résistance se lève, qui aboutira dans les années 1960 à l’indépendance de presque toutes les colonies.
