Reading School Relief Carved and Silver Accented Golden Age Kentucky Rifle | Unknown Builder
There is a crude marking on the upper right flat near the vent that looks like "NY," and it has a "KETLAND/& Co" marked lock. Otherwise, the rifle has no identifying markings. The profile and patchbox design are both very similar to rifles associated with the Reading School in Pennsylvania and has many attributes that are particularly similar to the rifles attributed to Wolfgang Haga/Hagens, such as those shown on pages 42-43 of "Berks County Longrifles & Gunmakers 1750-1900" by Patrick Hornberger and those on pages 122 and 130 of "Kentucky Rifles & Pistols 1750-1850" by Johnston and the Kentucky Rifle Association. Others with similar attributes are known by other gunmakers, including Stoffil Smith. The Kentucky Rifle Foundation states: "The legendary Wolfgang Haga was a gunsmith working in Reading according to a land grant dated 1767. Further tax records show him still working in Reading in 1779. No signed guns by Haga have been found, yet rifle design attributed to Haga set the standard for the Berks County style with later gunmakers copying his 'Roman-nose' stock and basic patchbox design. Always made with strong grained substantial tiger maple, Haga’s rifles with simple raised carving are symbolic of the Berks County rugged style of rifle."

Today I'm out with my friend Barry and my father Mike and we're shooting the Cabin Fever Challenge. For those of you unfamiliar, the cabin fever challenge was started by “rifle chair” as a way for shooting sports enthusiasts to get out in mid winter/early spring to have some fun with marksmen from around the globe.
This is some of the most fun I’ve had with my muzzleloaders in a while and offers a great challenge to newcomers and verterans of blackpowder alike.
I’m shooting my .40 cal Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle
Barry is shooting his original .69 cal Kammerlader
Mike is shooting his homemade .50 cal Isaac Haines-inspired flintlock rifle.
Since the start, the competition has grown and now includes 6 division, most recently .22 rimfire. Today my group is participating in the muzzleloader division, division 5.

In the muzzle loader division, we are tasked with shooting 1 shot standing, kneeling, prone, and sitting as fast as we can. Our target is an 8” bull set at 50 yards. Shots cutting the black bull, or in the black bull count as “hits” regardless of location in the bull. Scores are calculated by (Number of Hits) x5/ Time in seconds x 100.
As a bit of a match recap, I think I could have improved by making sure my gear was in order before started. You’ll notice I left my ball block on the bench out of arm’s reach. And then going into my 3rd shot, I lost my flint. Both of these errors really cut into the time portion of my score, but I’m pleased with the 3 hits out of 4 for my first attempt at this challenge. Shooting 50 yards in the cold wind like we were was a welcome challenge.
I tried to streamline my set up for a second run, but was only able to shave off a few seconds and had several less successful shots. Speed is fine, but accuracy is final.
As of publishing, there is still time to try this challenge for yourself and I hope that you do, even if you don’t submit for score. This was a lot of fun and gives me a lot of ideas for future muzzleloading matches. Do you think it’s possible to do a 3-Gun muzzleloading match?

As spring began to thaw the cold Indiana landscape I was making plans for summer and how I wanted to spend it. I knew I wanted to pick up a production inline muzzleloader and with the shutdowns of 2020 fresh on my mind, I knew it could be hard to get one. After a year of no caps or powder, the shortages began to hit muzzle loader inventory.
I started shopping online, called some local shops and ultimately went with Muzzle-loaders.com Muzzle-loaders.com offers this neat service where you can pick out your muzzleloader, scope rings, scope, case and sling at a fair discount. They even set everything up and boresight it for you, all included in the price of the package.
While doing my research, none of the brick and mortar stores had what I wanted, let alone much product to look at and see in person.
For my latest factory modern muzzleloader I went with the CVA Accura LR V2. I was pretty excited about the changes introduced with the Accura LRX earlier this year, mainly the threaded muzzle for a muzzlebrake and adjustable cheek rest in the stock, but didn't want to wait, so I jumped back a model and picked the LR V2.

Beyond the Bluegrass commemorates the sacrifices and contributions William Henry Harrison made for this country and the longrifles’ role during the times. One such contribution includes his negotiated treaties that ceded the lands of Illinois and Southern Indiana to the United States. When diplomacy by the pen failed, he risked his life at the Battles of Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, Fort Meigs, and the Thames River and was consistently victorious. His army’s primary tools were muzzle-loading firearms.

Following his efforts, westward American pioneers enjoyed affordable land in the Midwest in a less hostile environment. Farmers, tradesmen, and artists prospered. Gunmakers came from the East and the South into Indiana. Their product evolved and their story will be told at Grouseland, the former home of a U.S. President. Thousands of visitors annually tour the mansion and enjoy many artifacts once owned by Harrison and his family, or that are of the era.

Today we're back in the shop for our first Winter 2023-2024 project! This kit is a continuation of the Lyman Plains Blackpowder Pistol, now made by InvestArm of Italy.
In this video I focus on re-shaping the lock and side plate mortises for a more artistic and historically accurate look. There is a lot of wood to remove and taking the time to clean up these areas will pay dividends as we move forward. I'll use the half round, medium coarseness file to do most of this work.

Muzzleloaders are often the canvas an artist uses to tell a story. This ornate wheel lock muzzleloading pistol is no exception. Attributed to the "Master of Castles", an elusive artist or group of artists working during the 16th-17th centuries, this muzzleloader tells the story of a hunter and his dogs hunting for game.
This incredible muzzle loader has countless bone and pearl inlays, all meticulously inscribed to show extreme detail, the kind of detail we expect from artists in the late 19th century.

This incredible wheellock pistol was likely meant as an artistic presentation piece rather than for actual use as a weapon given its extensive ornamentation, delicate mother of pearl inlays, and small caliber, but it is a functional firearm from the late 16th century or early 17th century. Its decoration is attributed to the famous "Master of the Castles" who decorated a series of ornate wheellock pistol stocks c. 1590-1620 with bone, staghorn, and mother of pearl inlays that often included castle scenes. The various design elements are consistent with the body of work attributed to this unknown master artisan or group of artisans, including pistols in the Waddesdon collection (accession numbers: 5187 and 3455). The stock is what really sets the pistol apart. It is extensively inlaid with staghorn/bone and mother of pearl engraved with a variety of intricate designs. The scene of the hunter firing a wheellock long gun on the left stock flat is the most prominent. The four castle/estate scenes on the forend are particularly important given the attributed stockmaker's moniker, but the smaller details can be just as intriguing such as the grotesque masks ahead of and behind the safety on the left, the rabbit to the left of the barrel tang among the scrolls, the snail among the scrolls on the right side of the barrel tang, the masks on the egg shaped pommel and bottom of the stock, and the various fine elements throughout.

Jake attended events with his parents from a young age and had a defining experience in his early teens when he met Nathan Kobuck and others doing serious historic impressions. Jake continued to stay in the hobby and found his own thing within it, which led to heavy research on clothing and using period equipment.
Jake talks about his interest in living history and how he got into it. He explains that his dad's interest in history and muzzle loading influenced him from a young age. Jake attended events with his parents and was exposed to the hobby. However, it wasn't until he attended his first 'immersion event' where he becamed hooked on a whole new section of the hobby.
He also discusses the challenges and rewards of limiting oneself to a specific time and place in history, as well as the impact of the internet on research. Jake shares memorable experiences from living history events, including an immersive event based on historical captive narratives that he helped plan and host. The conversation highlights the unique challenges and experiences that come with participating in living history and muzzle loading.

In part 12 of what I am sure is now the slowest releasing series ever ;), we are getting the trigger guard ready for finish. Trigger guards are some of the most complex pieces of hardware on muzzleloaders due to their complex curves and face changes.
Working on trigger guards is an easy way to practice your filing techniques. If you can clean up a trigger guard casting, you can file just about anything!
