Is Donald Trump self-funding his campaign?
President Donald Trump wouldn’t be beholden to special interests, he says.
Why? Because billionaires aren’t paying for his campaign.
"You know a lot of times you see these really dumb deals," he said of current political leaders at an Iowa rally Feb. 1. "And you'll say that's dumb. It doesn't make sense. But then when you think, it does make sense because these politicians are representing interests, whether it's a country or a company, where doing the stupid deals actually makes sense only for that politician and for that company or country."
In contrast, Trump said, "I'm self-funding my own campaign. It's my money."
Trump talks about self-funding his own campaign almost every day, it seems, so it’s about time we put it on the Truth-O-Meter.
The fact is, Trump’s campaign isn’t 100 percent self-funded. He receives a significant amount of individual donations. But he does have a point that he puts up a lot of his own money, especially compared with other candidates (and that big-money donors are largely staying away).

Andy Sabin's "Hillary for Prison 2016" signs kept getting stolen from the front of his Amagansett, N.Y., home, so he came up with an interesting solution: He placed the signs on 12-foot poles behind an electric fence with yellow warning signs and a surveillance camera.
The Hamptons resident first put the signs up outside his house last week, but they only lasted one day before they were stolen. That's when he decided to take extreme measures to make them more secure.
Sabin told the New York Post he believes that Clinton supporters took the signs, since his signs showing his support for John McCain in 2008 were also stolen.
“Living in a town with a lot of left-wing wackos, that’s what happens,” he said.

Alberta government says $760 cab ride for panel members is justified
The NDP government is defending a $760 cab fare expense claim made by the chair of the Calgary and South Mental Health Review Panel.
Marilyn Smith submitted the ticket for a refund after she and two other members of the panel took a taxi from Calgary to Medicine Hat on May 5.
“These costs would be higher if panel members each drove their own vehicles, and triple or four times the cost if members travelled by plane,” read an email from Timothy Wilson, the press secretary for the health minister. “We do not force panel members to drive if they are not comfortable taking passengers.”

This time big business is getting into the mix and they're aiming for gun stores right at the source of their revenues -- their transaction processing facilities.
According to Larry Hyatt, owner of the largest gun brokerage firm in the United States, Authorize.net, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Visa USA and one of the world's largest credit card processing gateways, has terminated their relationship with the firm.
After four years in business with the Visa owned Authorize.net, Larry Hyatt, owner of Hyatt Gun Shop, received an email indicating that the company would no longer provide its services due to "the sale of firearms or any similar product."
The email reads:
Dear Hyatt Gun Shop Inc,
Authorize.Net LLC ("Authorize.Net") has determined that the nature of your business constitutes a violation of Section 2.xiv of the Authorize.Net Acceptable Use Guidelines and Sections 3.3 and 11.3 of the Authorize.Net Service Agreement (the "Agreement").
These sections include, but are not limited to, the sale of firearms or any similar product.
Accordingly, pursuant to Section 4 of the Acceptable Use Guidelines, your ability to access and use the Authorize.NetServices will be terminated on September 30, 2013.
Hyatt's massive online store will be unable to process credit card transactions, giving the store only a few days to find a new processing company before Authorize.net terminates their business relationship.
"We've never seen anything like this," Hyatt Marketing Director Justin Anderson told the Washington Examiner.
All of a sudden, after four years of doing business together, Authorize.net declares that Hyatt Gun Shop is in violation of their terms of agreement.

Some parents are angry over a fundraiser at a public elementary school in North Carolina. Lucama Elementary School in Wilson County is raffling off a rifle.
Lucama is a rural town in North Carolina. Like many schools, Lucama Elementary is suffering from budget cuts.
"We have enough issues with guns in the schools we don't need to do a raffle with elementary school kids," Lena Collier said.
Hearing about the fundraiser in a couple of weeks, a local hunting conservation group decided to help. It offered a muzzle-loading gun to raffle off.
"Our guys are simply trying to help the kids in the community with the means they have available," explained Chris Williams with Delta Waterfowl.
The company says its motives are simple, to help children not push an agenda. But locals are reacting.
"The kids are bringing guns to school-they ain't gotta bring' em for 'em and auction 'em off," said resident Steve Sbraccia.
The school system says as long as no children sell or buy tickets, and the gun is not brought onto school property during the raffle, it is okay with it.
Originally only twenty raffle tickets were going to be printed for the gun, but there was so much interest, hundreds more have been printed and sold.

Iowa law enforcement officials are debating the wisdom of granting gun permits to blind people.
The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa law doesn't allow sheriffs to deny a permit to carry a gun in public based on physical ability.
Some sheriffs have been granting gun permits to people with visual impairments while others have been denying them.
Blind people and other Iowans can obtain the permits for carrying a weapon in public because of changes to state law that took effect in 2011.
Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people from obtaining weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Some other states, including Nebraska, require anyone applying for a gun permit to provide proof of their visual ability by supplying a driver's license or doctor's statement.
Hudson said she thinks someone could successfully challenge Nebraska's vision restriction because federal law requires states to analyze a situation individually before denying a service.
"The fact that you can't drive a car doesn't mean you can't go to a shooting range and see a target," Hudson said.
Polk County officials said they have issued weapons permits to people who can't drive legally because of vision problems at least three times. Sheriffs in Jasper, Kossuth and Delaware counties say they've also granted permits to Iowans with severe visual impairments.

Alaska restricts people from carrying guns in any place where alcohol is served for on-site consumption (with the exemption of restaurants that serve alcohol, if you are not drinking), schools, domestic violence shelters, courts, and correctional institutions. A person carrying a concealed gun in Alaska, when contacted by a police officer is required by law to inform the officer they are carrying and cooperate if the officer chooses to temporarily seize the gun for the length of the encounter. The possession of any firearm while intoxicated is illegal.
Political instability is a major impediment to business and investment on First Nations reserves in Canada. It is a problem right up there with land ownership restrictions and lack of access to capital.

The federal government has brought forward reforms to improve legal certainties surrounding reserve lands. First Nations and the government need to work closer together to overcome these obstacles in order for these communities to improve.

I watched this evening's 60 Minutes profile of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
While Lara Logan did try, she was not immune from the younger Trudeau's charms.
But I was not so bothered by Logan as I was by Trudeau himself who came across as smug and condescending in a manner reminiscent of President Obama. Only he did so with a Canadian twist.
When Logan asked him about the possibility of a terrorist attack being committed by one of the 25,000 Syrian refugees Canada has accepted, Trudeau stated, "Ultimately, being open and respectful towards each other is much more powerful as a way to diffuse hatred and anger than, you know, layering on, you know, big walls and oppressive policies."

Liberals plan for huge influx of refugees, immigrant spouses at expense of skilled foreign workers
The Liberal government has cut the number of skilled foreign workers it will allow into Canada this year to make room for a huge influx of Syrian refugees, immigrant spouses and children.
Immigration Minister John McCallum says the reduction in economic immigrants is a “temporary pause” that will have minimal impact on Canada’s well-being and prosperity. But the move has nonetheless raised concerns from business groups about the Liberals’ long-term plans for immigration.
At the same time, the government could face a backlash from some ethnic communities for not letting more immigrant parents and grandparents into Canada to be reunited with their families.
McCallum announced the changes at an event in Brampton, Ont., on Tuesday, only a short distance from where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his party’s immigration policy during last year’s federal election campaign.
McCallum touted the fact that Canada will be aiming for the first time in history to accept more than 300,000 immigrants in a single year. That represents an increase of 20,000 from 2015.
