The Covid-19 Pandemic has affected everyone and everything, but perhaps nothing has suffered quite as much as the Tourism Industry. Airlines, Travel agents, Tour guides, Hotels, Restaurants and basically everything dedicated to travel has suffered. The sector to have been hit the hardest though, is the Cruise Industry. This $150 billion Industry is sinking and is frantically scrapping ships in an effort to keep itself afloat. What happened? The Cruise Industry was expecting to carry 32 million passengers in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit many of these passengers had already booked and paid for their tickets, this money had to be reimbursed. Royal Caribbean carried approximately 6.1 million passengers in 2018 and those passengers spent around $9.5 billion, that's $1,560 per person. Of that $1,560 only $298 is profit, the rest is expenses, commissions, insurance costs, port costs, and general maintenance costs. With most of the planet confined or under restrictions, nobody was going to go on a cruise in 2020, or 2021 and probably not even in 2022, so the Cruise Industry is now facing the possibility of at least three years with little or no income and a lot of outgoings. Costs. Even when a cruise ship isn't in use it still has outgoings, There are insurance costs, docking costs, taxes, amortization and depreciation expenses, and maintenance costs. Cruise ships must be dry-docked and inspected and repaired at least twice every 5 years, this is a very costly process.
