Short US, Go Long Australia The Aussie market had to play catch up after being closed for the public holiday on Monday. As a result, the ASX 200 closed down 3.66%, after being down 5% at the open. After yesterday’s sell-off, the ASX 200 is now at the lowest point since March 2021. While the benchmark index is down just 12.4% from the peak, there’s a huge amount of damage below the surface. For example, the chart below shows how many stocks on the ASX are within 20% of their 52-week highs. After yesterday’s panic, there are now just 19% of ASX stocks in this category. That means over 80% of stocks are in a bear market — the definition of a bear market being a share price 20% below the recent peak.
