***"The Auteurs"*** were a British alternative rock band of the 1990s, and a vehicle for songwriter ***[Luke Haines](https://cutt.ly/JncuRe6)*** (guitar, piano and vocals).
Formerly a member of ***"[The Servants](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)"***, Haines created the Auteurs with his then-girlfriend ***[Alice Readman](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)*** on bass guitar, former classmate ***[Glenn Collins](https://cutt.ly/AnciuAS)*** on drums, and later added ***[James Banbury](https://cutt.ly/nncisTw)*** on cello.
At the start of their career, ***”The Auteurs”*** became associated with the Britpop movement, however this association was not liked by ***Haines***, who frequently made derogatory remarks about his peers.
Frontman and the group's guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, wrote highly melodic pop songs that combined the airy melodies of ***[George Harrison](https://cutt.ly/encihWZ)*** with the cutting social observations of ***[Ray Davies](https://cutt.ly/OncikOl)***; they were sharp, intelligent songs, full of humor and gorgeous melancholy, even when loudly rocking.
Opening bedroom tale ***"[The Rubettes](https://cutt.ly/4nOOhfu)"*** features a delicate, Brill Building lullaby chorus while a repetitive staccato riff offplays the fragility. The title track's quiet chaos on The Auteurs fourth studio album ***"How I Learned to Love the Bootboys"*** has Haines' whispered vocals buttressed by sirens, percolating electro bleeps, and a graceful dub bassline.
***"[Your Gang Our Gang](https://cutt.ly/enOOdIP)"*** relocates the fight scenes of Grease and West Side Story to the streets of London with equal doses of menace and tongue-in-cheek. Tough and joyful at the same time.
Haines' guitar has never sounded so fittingly sharp while avoiding abrasiveness.
On his last ***"The Auteurs"*** album he integrated the sound of 1970s glam, in the form of glossy synths, twinkling xylophones, doowop vocals, perfect pop hooks, and saccharine sentiments... but always caged in his elegant guitar lines, and hushed narration.

Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
Aided by string arrangements from ***[John Paul Jones](https://cutt.ly/AmOXPYS)***, the band’s eighth album***”Automatic for the People”*** features ruminations on mortality, loss, mourning and nostalgia.
At its core, it’s a collection of folk songs about aging, death, and loss, but the music has a grand, epic sweep provided by layers of lush strings, interweaving acoustic instruments, and shimmering keyboards.
The album captures the group at a crossroads, as they moved from cult heroes to elder statesmen, and the album is a graceful transition into their new status.
***”R.E.M.”*** have never been as emotionally direct as they are on this album, nor have they ever created music quite as rich and timeless, and while the record is not an easy listen, it is the most rewarding record in their oeuvre.

Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies, and evocative, cryptic lyrics, ***"Pixies"*** are one of alternative rock's most influential bands.
They turned conventions inside-out, melding punk and indie guitar rock, classic pop, surf rock, and stadium-sized riffs with bizarre, fragmented lyrics about space, religion, sex, mutilation, and pop culture. No matter how much lyrics may have been impenetrable, the music was direct, forceful, and laid the groundwork for the alternative explosion of the early '90s.
***”Head Carrier”*** is the band’s sixth studio album, released on September 30, 2016 on ***”Pixiesmusic”*** and ***”[PIAS](https://cutt.ly/DnkqIva)”***. Produced by ***[Tom Dalgety](https://cutt.ly/vnkqDnZ)***, and recorded at ***”[RAK Studios](https://cutt.ly/1nkqKcA)”*** in London, the album is the first to feature former ***”A Perfect Circle”*** and ***”Zwan”*** bass guitarist ***Paz Lenchantin***, who joined the band in 2014 to tour in support of its previous album, ***”Indie Cindy”***.

However, the niceness turns strange on ***"[All I Think About Now](https://cutt.ly/5nlqJOi)"***. A musical thank-you note to Deal written by Black Francis and sung by Lenchantin that shamelessly borrows from ***"[Where Is My Mind?](https://cutt.ly/pnlqXBF)"***, it manages to be both jarring and overly nostalgic.
But still, there is Indiecindyc feel that everything on the new release sounds like it could come from Frank Black's 177th solo album, that they still occasionally shine and reminds of how great this band once were. It's a meaby little bit of a matter of taste, but mostly a matter of wrong expectations?
While it feels like ***”Pixies”*** are still figuring out how to continue their legacy, ***”Head Carrier's”*** best moments suggest they're heading in the right direction.
