One of the greatest pipers of all time, Francis McPeake believes that the uilleann pipes may have entered Ireland through India, as did many of the dance steps. “The soldiers went dancing, not for the women, but for a wholesome musical experience.They appear to have brought in several influences,” he said. The uilleann pipe is an indispensable part of Irish music. Francis McPeake believes that like the tanpura, the drone of this instrument which continues throughout any uilleann performance, has a spiritual significance. “Like in Indian music, the drone is the backbone of the melody and has a spiritual significance in Irish music as well. Both cultures believe that it is meant to appease the Lord. It is symbolic. Just as all life emanates from the universal source it also returns to it. All the music we create emerges from the drone and merges back into it,” he says. Traditionally the uilleann pipes are played at many Irish family celebrations such as marriages. The ancient Celtic symbol in the video, is known as the triquetra and is considered as one of oldest symbols; dating back to as early as 500 BC when it was used to symbolize the triple goddess (maiden-mother-crone). Over the centuries it has become the symbol for the Holy Trinity among Christians in Ireland. The symbol is often used to represent the 3 fundamental elements – air, water, and earth or the infinite cycle of life. It is also known as a rune of protection. In modern times, the triquetra symbol has become a favorite design element in knot-work, jewelry, emblems, logos etc. as a symbol of anything three-fold e.g. the cycle of life (life-death-rebirth), the promise of a husband to his wife (love-honor-protect), the family (father-mother-child), the passage of time (past-present-future) and many more.
