Nuances is a ballet consisting of 14 piano works by Alexander Scriabin orchestrated by Alexander Nemtin. The work typically lasts around 30 minutes and features lighting effects from Scriabin's Clavier à lumières.
"It was after hearing Part One of the Preparation for the Final Mystery, 'Universe', that the idea of creating a ballet based on Scriabin's music occurred to Faubion Bowers, the American author of an influential book on Scriabin. In April 1975 he commissioned Alexander Nemtin to write a suite for orchestra based on some of the composer's late piano miniatures. Seven months later the score was complete. It attracted little attention, however, until 1996, when Vladimir Ashkenazy made the world première recording, thus opening the way for conductors and choreographers to bring this work to the concert hall and stage.
The ballet Nuances has no plot as such. Although there is much room for interpretation, a certain logical development is suggested for the music, lighting and choreography by the ordering of the pieces. Creating the present sequence of fourteen piano pieces, which Scriabin composed at different times, however, was no easy task without some indication of narrative line. The Suite includes the use of lighting and tonal effects to create an overall dramatic movement.
The score comprises orchestrations of the following pieces:
1. Poème languide, Op. 53, No. 2
2. Poème, Op. 59, No. 1
3. Feuillet d'album, Op. 58
4. Poème ailé, Op. 51, No. 3
5. Désir, Op. 57, No. 1
6. Caresse dansée, Op. 57, No. 2
7. Étude, Op. 65, No. 1
8. Poème-Nocturne, Op. 61
9. Prélude, Op. 74, No. 5
10. Poème, Op. 71, No. 1
11. Prélude, Op. 59, No. 2
