It argues that the relation of cinema to social transformation cannot be understood in terms of individual films that articulate recognizable political positions or act as mirrors of the nation. Rather, the cinema is a particular mode of spatial, economic, and historical circulation that itself provides materials for social critique, regardless of what happens in the films. Drawing on archival research and original translations, I move away from films of celebrated auteurs to instead consider a range of heterodox cinematic materials, including documentaries produced by automobile manufacturers, experimental cinegiornali (newsreels), and low-budget police films. The texts of these films themselves are only isolated moments within far larger processes of cinematic production, distribution, and viewership that cannot be separated from the physical spaces and social spheres they traverse and link, the same spaces crossed by the explosive riots and social movements of these years. Such links between discrete phenomena, like films, and the broader social contradictions animating them became of unprecedented importance in the decades of this study, both as the planned network of the city-factory and as that networks historical failure to manage traffic, overcrowding, and diffuse discontent that manifested as a contestation of the very spatial ordering of metropolitan life itself. It is the cinema, as the medium of circulation, that allows us to sketch these connections on their own terrain.
