How the borrowed or shared neutral usually occurs on older lighting circuits, with a light fixture connected to line from one circuit and neutral from another.
This arrangement is NOT permitted, however can still be found in older properties, usually those from the 1960s / 1970s.

A very poor quality multiway extension socket with flex and illegal plug attached.
Virtually everything about this device is wrong and dangerous.
The plug has no fuse, making it unsafe for use in the UK - most UK outlets are connected to 32A circuits and all UK BS1363 plugs contain fuses.
Even when used with a 10A fused circuit it would still be dangerous, there really is no possible way to use this thing safely.
This item was purchased on ebay UK from a seller located in the UK, item was also shipped from the UK.
Product is marked ASTRA, code BT311. There is no barcode, manufacturer name, address or any other identification.

A look inside a typical circuit breaker or MCB.
These particular ones are made by Crabtree, but most others will be similar inside.
These were removed from an installation after being damaged by a water leak, however there is no real evidence inside of why some of these stopped working - they all have continuity through them now.

An isolated supply is not referenced to ground, and so the only way to get a shock from it is to touch both conductors at the same time.
They are not used everywhere as it is very difficult to ensure they remain isolated - any fault to ground anywhere would go unnoticed but convert the system to ground referenced.
