The single bloodroot leaf and flower each rise on a separate stem, and at first the leaf completely enwraps the flower bud. The clear, white, many-petaled blossom may open before the leaf has completely unwrapped. This fragile spring flower develops and rises from the center of its curled leaf, opening in full sun, and closing at night. Like most members of the Poppy Family, it lasts for a relatively short time.
The red juice from the underground stem was used by Indians as a dye for baskets, clothing, and war paint, as well as for insect repellent. The generic name, from the Latin sanguinarius, means bleeding.
Bloodroot is considered an At- Risk plant by the United plant savers. Please only harvest if you really need it and if there is an abundance at your chosen site. For more information on United Plant Savers visit www.unitedplantsavers.org

This is a radio talk where Host Sitaram Das interviews Dan Farella. They discuss topics including foraging, herbalism, nature, yoga, and how Dan is seeking to unite them all in his own life. "They talk about the plants, and how they are manifestations of the Goddess. They speak about the importance of working with the mental conditioning that keeps us separate from nature, and the healing medicine that may be growing in our own back yards. All Plants Are Prasad!

Hey foragers,
Heres a look at one of my favorite controversial plants... Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is a controversial but highly medicinal and sometimes, if rendered correctly, a delicious edible plant. This plant can be VERY poisonous and shows up often where people dont want it to grow, BUT, it has every right to be in North America, as the species name (americana) indicates. It IS a native plant! Poke, when worked with properly, has also a host of medicinal applications aside from it having been one of the most common wild edible plants at the turn of the century... Even Elvis had a song called "Poke Salet Annie".
In this video, I share in some of the ways to identify and work with this plant as an add onto my short video on how to prepare it as a food ( "Pokeweed preparation in 21 minutes") which shows you how to eat it safely when in season.
As with all plants, always be careful when trying any wild food, eat a small amount first to make sure you have a. prepared it correctly, and b. that you wont get a unique allergic reaction.

This song was inspired from a sign I saw walking at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, on it was a quote "he has the power to gather wisdom from a flower", and it was not attributed to anyone. I couldnt stop singing it all day, and out of it this song developed. Written in Katyas kitchen, with Varyas guitar. Thanks friends =)
In this video I used footage of many of the profound nature experiences I've had in the last few years seeking these mysteries. From finding a huge snapping turtle on the side of the road, to discovering bald eagles, to identification of plants as foods and medicines, I tried to intersperse this all into the theme of the song, using some graphics aspects as an experiment. Hope you enjoy!

A Look at wild onion - Allium species.
These can easily be identified by the onion smell, bulb, and the hollow leaves. Wild onions are most succulent in the spring and fall, getting more woody in mid summer. They grow in practically every back yard. A great food and medicinal herb.
This is a clip from a plant walk at the Essex Environmental Center, in Roseland, NJ
