With the alt market going crazy and coins doin double figures on consecutive days, it can be tempting to think that the bubble has to burst soon or, if you haven’t made the most of it, that you have missed your opportunity. However, as we can see, there is a very strong argument to suggest that in fact, rather than alt season coming to an end, it is only the beginning and the best is yet to come.
Block.One co-founder and CTO Dan Larimer has announced that he left the company on December 31. Larimer says he has no immediate future plans except to “create free market, voluntary solutions for securing life, liberty, property, and justice for all”, although the fact that he recently left Twitter citing censorship concerns could dictate where he turns his attention next. Block.One is the creator of EOS.io, the project that raised $4 billion at ICO.

The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) has given Satoshi Nakamoto-pretender Craig Wright a dose of his own medicine and started legal proceedings against him over the Bitcoin whitepaper copyright farrago. COPA, which was launched in September 2020 and includes representatives of a number of cryptocurrency and blockchain entities including Coinbase, Blockstream, and Square, has taken Wright to task over his claims of ownership over the Bitcoin whitepaper and the threats he has made to those hosting the whitepaper.

Cryptocurrency users in the Netherlands face extra scrutiny of their actions thanks to a new set of requirements imposed by the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). The 1977 Sanction Act, which was introduced in order to try and crack down on the sending of money to sanctioned countries, has now been revised to include cryptocurrency. As such, those wishing to buy cryptocurrency through Dutch onramps will be asked why they want to buy it and where they plan to store it, with the DNB even requiring proof of ownership.

The Financial Times doesn’t like Bitcoin. Or cryptocurrency. Or anything outside of its traditional banking sphere. This perhaps isn’t surprising considering that the newspaper is 132 years old and caters to a particular crowd, but while some of their arguments are legitimate, every so often they are so dismissive one or other aspects of Bitcoin that they remind you of the ‘old man shouts at Bitcoin’ meme.

U.S. authorities have announced the disruption of three cryptocurrency terror funding networks, representing the government’s largest-ever such seizure. Over 300 cryptocurrency accounts, four websites, and four Facebook pages all related to terrorist activities were all taken down in the move that saw millions of dollars in cryptocurrency seized.

OneCoin, the cryptocurrency-based Ponzi scheme that stole $4 billion from thousands of investors all over the world, is to get the Hollywood treatment after MGM announced that a movie is in the works. Following its success as a BBC podcast, which is itself being remade into a TV series, Fake! will see Kate Winslet star as one of the more outspoken OneCoin scam victims Jen McAdam, who, along with her family, lost some $300,000, with the film being based on McAdam’s forthcoming book on the subject.

It is quite fitting that at a time when Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is getting its annual airing, the Financial Times should appear to have experienced something of a melting of its ice-cold heart with regard to Bitcoin. It’s too early to say that the curmudgeonly 132-year-old newspaper’s correspondents have gone full Scrooge, but it seems that their icy hearts might at least be thawing to the cryptocurrency - and all it took was billions of dollars of institutional money.

John McAfee, the anti-establishment renegade who was arrested in Spain in October on the orders of U.S. authorities, has been formally charged with fraud and money laundering charges by the Department of Justice (DoJ). McAfee, who was famous in 2017 for his Coin of the Week promotional tweets, allegedly made more than $13 million by promoting the coins to his Twitter followers without disclosing that he was being sponsored to do so. McAfee, who fled Belize after the death of his neighbor in 2012, has spoken of his disdain for what he perceives as an oppressive government regime, and he could be about to see just how oppressive it can be.
