May to the June baby! Might as well start off the first day of October with the first Castlevania game. The one and only original Simon Belmont crushes all who oppose him, especially Death. The secret to this game is Holy Water x3, all day, every day. If you know the spots and tricks, it's really not as tough as some people make it sound, but there's still a lot of execution involved in combination with careful strategic planning. My play could still use some polish, and like some other runs on this channel, it unnecessarily comes down to the wire, but another run on "Hard" mode via Round 2 and up will iron out all of those wrinkles. All in good time.
Played on authentic NES hardware. No save states, pausing, turbos, tool assists or any other cheats of any kind were used.

Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president? Blade is a bad enough dude to rescue the president in a single life.
There are a handful of spots in this game that you can use as makeshift "checkpoints" in picking up health on the way to either the next health pickup or boss. The nunchuks are your best friend here, your bread and butter, while the Power Punch is the spice of your life. The toughest two spots are either time going up against the bo staff boss. I use a mixture of technique and attrition the first time, and mostly attrition the second time (since the boss rush versions have less health).
Played on authentic NES hardware. No turbos, save states, pausing or other cheat codes or tool assists allowed.

Whew! This was one of the most challenging runs in this channel's history. Everything about the process was unforgiving and just plain awful in figuring out the final stage. A lot of things have to go your way, and many times the variation in item drops works against you in the last stretch. There are many buggy spots that can also end any run immediately in the third stage, and the missile drop section of stage 2 is brutal. As tough as the process may be, most of the bosses are simple, sloppy slugfests, including the Grandmaster. The Ouroboros boss that takes you to that final area does a lot of variable behavior as well, often making you eat a hit along without much you can do to prevent it. The spiky area in the middle of the final stage, however, is among the most sadistic in any game in recent memory. After well over 30 attempts and a lot of screaming and cursing, I finally put this one to bed.
Played on PSX disc on a PS2. No save states, pausing, turbos (even though Triangle acts as a rapid fire button, I avoided it), tool assists or any other cheats were used. Recorded via elgato and xsplit.

No real boss fights in this stage, just some exo mercs, a more dangerous Angel and a potentially very dangerous gun turret area where you'll want your shield up and your dash frequent. Put your skill points into both at the expense of most everything else for that section.

A quick blow by blow on the classic 5 boss rush in Stage 6, followed by Shaft himself, with zero damage taken. Once you figure most of the bosses out, it's not so tough to get through them unscathed, save for Akmodan's wrap "snow" attack. I'd like to find some kind of foolproof safe spot so as to do this without subweapons, but the Axe item crash does just fine to clear them here. Shaft is a tad unpredictable, though. His 2nd "electric pillar" attack seems to vary in placement, and it can be very difficult to avoid taking damage from it depending on where you're standing in relation to Shaft. Things worked out here, though!

Part 11 of this series, stage by stage, on Normal for now. The difficulty ramps up a little bit and teases you with a few trap rooms, turrets, beams and floating mines. The ol' Dash 'n Frag deals with each, and you can dash through the electric beams, as well. Later on comes another encounter with Mother - just do exactly the same as the first encounter, and either shield or dash and fire. This time, you'll be better equipped, too. Immediately following that is another boss fight with a Heavy Cyborg! You can do a lot of damage with close range Frags and circling him tightly, but you'll take some damage doing this. You can more safely keep at a distance, pick up powerful weaponry if it's there, and put skill points into the Dash to stay moving.

Commentary video to come soon. Basically just a clip of an older run that happens to show Death die deathless and damage-less. Not quite as straightforward as his CV1 incarnation, but it's still all about Triple Shot Holy Water. Make your way to the RIGHT CENTER platform, chuck a vial just as Death starts to manifest, but watch your back, as there might just be a scythe behind you. Be ready to jump over it to the RIGHT UPWARD platform, resume your Holy Water throws as he's still stun-locked, and be ready to jump down as his first form will die soon. Resume Holy Water throws as needed from there. As his second form emerges, get a pattern going from the LOWER RIGHT block to burn on the RIGHT CENTER block. With proper timing, his second form will float right into your throws and that will be that!

The Stage 2 Boss might be the hardest one in the game to handle without taking any damage or reaching him unscathed. While the stage and boss itself aren't terribly tough, finishing with the No Damage bonus is ultra challenging due to all kinds of cheap hits, a lack of reliable strategy for playing it totally safe, etc. However, your best bet is to save up plenty of hearts and use the Stopwatch item crash! It will create a series of homing missiles that will keep him too busy to get too many of his cheaper attacks in, and if you can use it twice, he shouldn't survive after the second. Keep moving, and be ready to avoid that final attack!
