The order of operations is a rule for evaluating expressions in a certain order. We do parentheses, exponents, multiply or divide from left to right, add or subtract from left to right. An equation has an equal symbol and a numerical expression has no equal symbol. A numerical expression only contains numbers and operations. When we simplify a numerical expression, we find what it is equal to. We skip steps that are not in the order of operations. An exponent only affects the base that it's next to, and it affects the contents of parentheses if it is on the outside of the parentheses. We simplify five numerical expressions. We can use a.m. and p.m. to describe times of the day. We use a.m. for times that are after midnight and before noon. We use p.m. for times that are after noon and before midnight. Noon is 12 o'clock during the day. Midnight is 12 o'clock during the night. The minute hand and hour hand are both pointing to 12 at noon and at midnight. We write the given time of an analog clock, then circle a.m. or p.m. according to the given task. A.M. is an abbreviation for the Latin words ante meridiem, meaning before noon. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Irrational numbers cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers, or as a repeating or terminating decimal. We show how to estimate the value of an irrational number by finding two consecutive perfect squares that it is between. We write a compound inequality, and we take the square root of each number by placing them within a radical sign. Then we simplify the square roots of the perfect squares to find the two rational numbers that the square root falls between.
