Rest in peace, Jesse Rich. Jesse Rich, known as "Jess the Mess," vocalist and guitarist of the Orange County punk outfit Broken Bottles died two weeks ago of a drug overdose. The band's Facebook page was flooded early Thursday morning with condolences after drummer Jason Seamans confirmed the news by posting, "We are all devastated. Too many emotions to even think or speak clearly." Facebook fan July Cleaver was one of the first to comment, "Orange County punk has lot a truly unique part of it's scene, Travis, Ace and Jason, my heart goes out to you -- I am shocked and saddened by this news." Broken Bottles, which had just played a gig with fellow punks Narcoleptic Youth at the Slidebar in Fullerton on Monday, formed in Orange County a decade ago. Its first big break came when KROQ jockey Rodney Bingenheimer played the group's single "Gothic Chicks" on his "Rodney on the Roq" program. In 2002 the band released it's first full length album, "In the Bottles" on TKO Records. Broken Bottles went on to share stages with acts like the Adolescents, TSOL, Agent Orange, the Dickies, the Stitches, Smut Peddlers, Manic Hispanic and U.S. Bombs. A second album, "Hospital," was released in 2008. Julia Smut, drummer for the Redondo Beach punk act Smut Peddlers shared some fond memories of Rich on her blog: "Jess always kept you guessing. Onstage you might get silly string, some fireworks and sometimes some really stinky stink bombs!" "I know Jess battled some demons. I wish he had been able to beat them. I hope he is somewhere where they do not exist. He will live on forever in the music he created.
