Sennheiser G4 vs Deity Connect Wireless Range Comparison - Sound Speeds
Sennheiser G4 vs Deity Connect, the line of sight wireless range test...
The Deity Connect is a feature packed wireless system retailing for 3/4 of the cost ($669) of the tried and true Sennheiser G4 wireless system ($900). It's even more impressive that you get two transmitters (with lavs) and a dual receiver with each Deity Connect wireless system!
Naturally people in online sound forums are anxious to hear how the G4 compares to the Connect. One big concern people are voicing online is how good the range of the Connect's 2.4GHz wireless system compares to the 470-608 MHz G4 wireless system. In this video I put the two systems head to head in a wireless range comparison.
NOTE: Distance markers were mapped to GPS according to when I passed certain landmarks. Distances are approximate. Obstructions can affect wireless range and this was only a line of sight range test.
Thank you to Trew Audio in Atlanta, GA for loaning me the Sennheiser G4 wireless system for this comparison video.
Full disclosure: Deity did send me this Connect wireless system to keep in exchange for a fair review. This does not change the fact that my test is unbiased as will my review.

Since starting this channel in 2017 my goal has been to teach sound in ways that many other people can't or won't. Professional sound people don't often teach non-professionals the secrets they've spent their lives learning but on this channel, I'm not afraid to do that. I've been teaching sound classes since 2013 and Sound Speeds is an extension of those classes and brings to the internet, lessons I teach in the real world. With hundreds of videos in my archive you have days of content you can watch to learn about all aspects of sound from podcasting to boom operating to technical training.
If you enjoy content like that which is teased in this video, I welcome you to subscribe for weekly video releases.

Welcome to the eighteenth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. As with previous episodes we're going to discuss two topics in this video. This first is related to laving up talent. There are many ways to do it and I'm somewhat old school in my philosophy but it's peppered with modern day techniques as well. The second topic we'll discuss is how to break into sound for motion pictures. Is there an easy path or is it a difficult process? Let's talk about it!

Directors have a lot of power on a film set and when you get a sound friendly Director, your audio tracks will be next level but when you have a Director that's only focused on picture, it takes a toll on your sanity. The sound department wants excellent tracks but sometimes, the Director's vision can only be accomplished if fans are blowing the actor's hair or if everyone in the background is really screaming on set while running from a CGI monster.
Sometimes Directors get better results playing mood music on set for the actors to perform to and that brings a whole new level of complexity to recording dialogue. Luckily we boom operators are masters of reading people and use our top tier customer service skills to get the best possible results on set. In this video I'll go over what it's like working with movie and television Directors and give you some things to consider when interacting with them.

Has this ever happened to you? You trade out a condenser for a dynamic microphone only to realize that you forgot to turn off 48V phantom power when you used the later? Will phantom power hurt your dynamic microphone? In this video we'll go over just that!
I recently saw a Behringer XM8500 sparking when phantom power was engaged and decided now was the time to do this video. While you may have heard the phrase "Voltage doesn't kill, amperage does" and that is true, we're not talking about power enough to hurt a human but rather enough to hurt a microphone.
Dynamic microphones are usually pretty resilient to abuse but are there any conditions they might not be? Is powering them with phantom power? Well, let's get into it!

If you've watched my channel for a while you've probably heard me discuss microphone specifications and how there is no standard in place for measuring microphone specifications. Not only does every company follow their own testing methods but they can change them at will and for whatever reason. This can lead to some pretty confusing comparisons between microphone specifications.
Sensitivity is one specification that can be very confusing. From the standard used being a fictional hypothetical microphone with unachievable specs to the formulas used to calculate sensitivity suddenly changing, it can lead you to confusion and steer you away from purchasing vintage microphones. In this video I'll shed some light on old school microphone sensitivity specifications and help you convert them into a more modern value that will make more sense.
In this video I show the specifications for an old school vintage model of the AKG D120 microphone and then demonstrate how easy it is to convert the sensitivity specification to a newer, easier to read spec. I then reveal a hidden specification missing from the Sennheiser MKH-50's specification sheet.

Cameras continue to get smaller and simpler while our sound packages continue to get bigger and more complex. To make it even more fun, the expectations of the sound department continues
to expand. Soon we may reach a point where production is going to be waiting on sound but that is not today. Today it's more often considered lack of preparation if sound asks for a few
seconds. When we need it, we need it but try not to get to the point where you need it. But why? Sound Speeds!
