Hi, this is Michelle. We will study Gavotte in D major. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685, and died in 1750. He was the culminating figure of Baroque music, and his death marked the end of Baroque period. The tempo, dynamics, phrasings, fingerings and articulations all have been suggested by the editor. This Gavotte is in D major, and has 2 sharps, F sharps and C sharps. The time is Alla breve, a cut time of 2/2. A half note gets 1 beat, and there are 2 beats per measure. It starts and ends with incomplete measure. Each phrase has 4 bars, and there are 12 phrases including the repeats. The musical form is ternary, ABA’. There is the pedal point D, played by the left hand. There are trills in bar 1, 3, 5, 9, 17 and on. According to the Baroque Period style, these must be played from the upper notes. For learning purpose, I play them at 2:1 ratio. Because of the Pedal Point D and melodic voice in the left hand, which is quite busy.
